BARKSDALE ELEMENTARY
August 10, 2018
News from Principal Jennifer Caplinger
Dear Barksdale Family,
The 2018-2019 school year is right around the corner, and the building is starting to transform! This week, contractors are busy installing all of the flooring and completing the items needed to pass the city inspection. One thing we know is that the building will be open and ready for the students on the first day of school! The staff's first day back is today, and we are in Professional Development (learning) each day at various places until we can occupy the building. The staff is eagerly waiting to get their items back into the building and start unpacking. We do not have a date yet, but we are looking at the Friday of Meet the Teacher. Staff will be working all weekend to prepare for the students to arrive on Monday. Keep in mind that the building will be ready for us to move in, but please do not expect the classrooms/hallway to look like they have in previous years. It would be too much to ask our staff to complete in one weekend.
Please join us in welcoming our new staff members to Barksdale. I know you will help them feel like they are family.
- Kim Hawkins - 1st Grade Teacher
- Anna Windle - 3rd Grade Teacher
- Lauren Fambrough-4th Grade Teacher
- Madison Esparza- 4th Grade Teacher
- Rienzi Reckling-5th Grade Teacher
- Yash Gangal-Special Education Teacher
- Krystine Brown-Special Education Paraprofessional
- Sally Windle-Part Time Counselor
Thank you to all our returning parents for completing the online registration paperwork. If you have not done so, please complete by Friday (tomorrow). We will then add you to the class list. You must see two green check marks to know that you have completed the paperwork. Please go in and double check, as many have only completed one portion.
Once again we want to welcome all of our new families to Barksdale! We look forward to getting to know you and your children! We will see you at Meet the Teacher on Friday, August 10 from 7:30-8:30 AM outside the school.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Caplinger

Birthday treats - please read carefully
This year at Barksdale we are excited to continue to celebrate student birthdays in a variety of ways, however we are discontinuing food related birthday treats brought to school. We just received new carpet, and with all the bright colored frosting and sugar related foods, we respectfully ask no food be brought in for birthdays.
We enjoy making students feel special on their birthday, and in addition to announcing birthdays on our school morning announcements, each grade level will have their own fun way to celebrate. If you feel the need to send something to school with your child for his/her birthday, some possible non-food ideas include pencils, stickers, or a book for the classroom library. Your teacher will be giving you more specifics on this at Parent Information Night.
Please know that you do not have to send anything with your child on his/her birthday! We promise to make your child feel special!
Arrival Information
In the mornings, parents may drop off their children in either the front or the back carpool.
Please cross at crosswalks ONLY. Do not allow students to cross between cars or cross at unmarked areas.
Please pull forward to the first available numbered station.
When present, allow safety patrol students to open and close doors. Your child is allowed to open his or her own door, and should, if there is no one to assist him/her.
When safety patrol students are not available, please allow your child to exit curbside and enter the building.
First Bell rings at 7:30 am.
Instruction begins at 7:45 am.
Students are to be unpacked, in their seats, and ready to learn when the tardy bell rings at 7:45 am.
Our gym doors open at 7:00 am, and the cafeteria serves breakfast from 7:15-7:40 am daily.
It is important to allow for morning traffic and weather when dropping off your child.
Dismissal Information
Please do not park in the front and walk up to get your student.
Pull up to the first available station.
Back Carpool HOV (More than One Student Vehicle)
Students are escorted to the back area and stay with their grade level.
Pull up to the first available spot and teachers will assist in getting the students in the car.
Please use the crosswalks and help us keep students safe by not walking between cars.
Daycare will exit the fifth grade door and be escorted to their buses.
PASAR students will be escorted to the gym by each grade level.
RAINY DAY DISMISSAL
At 2:15, the decision will be made for rainy day dismissal. At that time a message will go out on parent portal. A sign will be placed outside of the first grade doors.
All walkers and bikers will be held with their grade levels in front carpool.
If parents do not come to pick up students, they will be dismissed to walk/bike.
Please do not walk between cars and NEVER let students walk between cars!
Students should enter on the passenger side ONLY!
Please be patient and kind to one another!!! Pulling to the left, honking, and being rude only causes more stress!
Just a reminder that it is a state law that no cell usage is allowed in school zone.
First semester in the cafeteria
Until construction of the cafeteria is completed, it will be operating with a modified menu. Food will be prepared off-site and transported to campus.
Please see the detailed information, including the modified menu, in the eNews section named "Under Construction".

We ask that there are no visitors for lunch during the first two weeks of school. For Kindergarten, we ask this for the first three weeks of school.
We will be practicing lunchroom procedures and it is a good time for students to socialize with their friends.
Once the semester is underway, one visitor may eat lunch in the cafeteria with a student, once per semester.
Do you wonder how much sleep your child needs?

Under Construction - Barksdale Refurbishment for the 2018/2019 School Year
We have exciting news to share with you!
Barksdale is going to get a whole new look for the 2018-2019 school year! Recently the Plano ISD School Board approved the budget for refurbishment. Some of the things that you will see are full renovation of the kitchen, new flooring throughout the building, upgraded teachers’ lounge and workroom, new metal student lockers, all new cabinetry, new furniture throughout the building, fresh paint, new playgrounds, upgrades to the HVAC units, chillers, boilers, electrical, plumbing, and more.
There will also be two additional classrooms added due to our projected enrollment. Construction on the two new classrooms will begin shortly. Teachers are busy cleaning out their classrooms after school and on the weekends, as everything in the entire school has to be removed starting June 1. We could not be more excited to see the new look, but we do know that we will have to make adjustments along the way. We will continue to update you throughout this process. Please know that none of this will impact your child’s learning this school year. They will begin working on everything over the summer, with the exception of the two new classrooms.
