Welcome to First Grade!
Meet the teacher
Hello! My name is Megan Friedman, and I am your child's first grade teacher. I am so excited to meet you and your family! I feel honored to be able to teach at Tatem Elementary School this year. Although this is my second year at Tatem, I am not new to teaching! This will begin my 6th year teaching first grade. If you'd like to read more about my educational and personal background, please check out the "Meet the Teacher" section on my eBoard here.
1st Grade Learning
Welcome to one of the most incredible years your child will have! First grade is an exciting time when children experience new adventures and learn skills at a fast rate. You will be impressed by how much your child will grow academically and socially this year.
During first grade we will use several different curriculums to ensure that your child is learning through the most beneficial programs. Your child will learn how to spell without hindering his or her ability to write creatively and share stories. Your child will learn how to read while still enjoying his or her favorite books. Your child will be able to explore and ask questions and then apply it to math or science experiments. Our day will consist of a combination of direct instruction, modeling, guided instruction, hands on learning, technology integration, and learning through social interactions.
Special Classes Schedule
We will have one or two specials a day. Our specials schedule is as follows:
Day 1: Art
Day 2: Physical Education
Day 3: Library and Spanish
Day 4: Music and Spanish
Day 5: Physical Education
Day 6: Health
Snack
We will also have snack daily. This snack will occur mid morning, so please keep this in mind while preparing a healthy snack. Please pack the snack separately from the lunch bag. Lunch bags will go down to the cafeteria in the morning, and we will not have access to them.
Communication
So much occurs in first grade! Because of this, parents and even children may be wondering what will happen. It is important to remember that every little thing learned is a success. Each child will progress at his or her own rate whenever he or she is developmentally ready. It is always important to maintain each child’s self-esteem to build a secure foundation for the future. Celebrate your child’s accomplishments, no matter how small.
Please read to and with your child every day. The more your child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him or her to incorporate these new skills into his or her reading and writing.
I am so excited to be working with your child this year! I know both you and I can make this year a special one for your child. Please know that we are partners in education. I believe that if we work together, we can achieve the best education for your child. I will have opportunities throughout the year for parents to be involved in the classroom as well!
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. You can reach me by calling the school at (856) 429-0902. You can also email me or leave a note in your child's folder. I will be keeping in contact with you by sending notes in your child's folder, sending emails, newsletters, and by updating my eBoard. You may get an occasional phone call from me. Please do not be alarmed, I call to celebrate your child's successes as well as to inform you of what has happened during the school day.
If you do not wish to receive emails from me any longer or would only like to receive emails to one of your family email addresses, please let me know.
I cannot wait to meet your child on Tuesday and get to know your family better. I hope to see you at school, at the welcome back movie night on Friday September 9th, and at Back to School Night on Wednesday September 14th!
