A Message from our Principal...
Dear Jefferson Families,
I sincerely hope that our students have enjoyed today’s 1st quarter celebration. We are trying to find ways to give students opportunities to talk and share some fun with classmates and their teachers. The students themselves suggested today’s activities. It’s so important that students have time to be together! All of us at Jefferson hope that your student will be able to enjoy a safe Halloween experience, whatever your family has planned. I remember last year’s Halloween was interrupted with a snowstorm! It looks like this year, the weather may be cooperative! Happy Fall!
You may have noticed that we’ve not yet been able to have students participate in Fall NWEA MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing. We’ve come up with a plan to give it a try remotely! Please bear with us, but we’d like to use the Fall NWEA test as a dry run to Winter and Spring assessments. What that means is that on the next two Wednesdays, students will log in to the NWEA testing site and take one assessment. On November 4th students will take the Math assessment. On November 11th students will take the Reading assessment. Each assessment is approximately one hour in duration. Teachers will be providing specific information to you and your student about each session.
We don’t want students or parents/guardians to stress about these assessments. We do want students to take them seriously and give good effort. We need to see how well remote testing works. More importantly, teachers want to know what students know so that they can best support each childs’ individual learning needs. Here’s how you can help your child: Gently encourage your child to do their best. Make sure they have eaten a good breakfast and had a good night’s rest. Remove distractions or keep them to a minimum while testing. Remind siblings or other family members not to help! We need to learn what our 4th and 5th graders know, not what their family members know! NWEA test results inform teachers and online programs that our students use such as Study Island and Exact Path. Those online programs can provide valuable support and practice for our students as they learn and use core essential learning targets.
We appreciate everything families are doing to support their child’s learning in this online environment. Hopefully, this month’s remote testing will provide good information to help us plan future instruction. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher.
Your feedback is greatly appreciated!
Warm regards,
Dr. Judy Floeter

Mr.Shields
My name is Mr. Shields, I am a part time reading teacher starting my fourth year here at Jefferson School. I spent most of my teaching career in the Harvard Schools as a special education or general education administrator. In fact, some of you parents may remember me from when you were at Harvard Jr. High or Harvard H. S. Before I came to Harvard I worked as a special education teacher teaching at the jr. high and high school levels.
