Bulldog Bulletin
August 31, 2018
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Bulldog Families,
Today marks the third full week of school and the end of August. As August draws to a close and September begins, our annual PastaBowl food drive begins. PastaBowl is designed to raise awareness for the 1 in 7 local students that struggle with food insecurity. By joining forces with other schools, PastaBowl has been able to raise tens of thousands of pounds of pasta to serve dozens of area food pantries and food banks. This is a wonderful opportunity for our New Britton students to “Be There” for others by bringing boxes and/or bags of pasta to school from 8/31-9/10. We have several bins located in our hallways throughout the building. The PastaBowl food drive leads up to our HSE Mudsock Football Game. Please consider attending this community event in which Fishers High School and HSE High School play football for the 2018 Mudsock Champion title.
School safety is a TEAM effort. Students, teachers, support staff, parents, and community members are part of our team. This past week, we had the opportunity for our Kindergarten and 2nd grade student to walk through ALICE Training. The training utilized the book, I’m Not Scared, I’m Prepared, by Julia Cook. The text uses an analogy of a shepherd, sheep and wolves in training the students to follow their teachers’ directions. Students are trained to stop, look and listen when an emergency arises. Our 1st, 3rd and 4th grade students will receive the same type of training via a podcast during the month of September. Those dates are yet to be determined.
The students seem to be settling into routines and increasing their stamina as readers, writers, thinkers, scientists, and problem solvers. As we visit classrooms, we see student engagement in independent and collaborative experiences that are helping them grow as learners. On a daily basis, students working together and sharing learning with others: book buddies, STEM challenges, and inquiry work. Yesterday, in the Media Center, Mrs. Hull’s students were selecting books that they could read to their kindergarten buddies. They were excited to share the titles they selected – “I know my buddy is going to love this book because Skippyjon is such a funny character.” Mrs. Shelton’s class has been sharing how others can be good citizens at New Britton. The connections that our students make with others is such an important part of the learning process!
If you are looking for a way to partner with us here at New Britton, we would love to have parents and family members volunteer in our school. All volunteers must have a current background check on file. Further information can be found on our website at: www.hseschools.org or call the main office.
Enjoy this extended holiday weekend. As always, thank you for partnering with us in education.
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin and Scott Gorrill

Staff Spotlight - Meet Mrs. Printz!
My name is Nancy Printz and I am very excited to be teaching at New Britton this year. I have been married to my husband James for eighteen years and we have a son, James, and a daughter Lily. We also have a very furry third child named Abby. I am from Parker City, Indiana. It is such a small town that we didn’t even have a stop light while I was growing up and that remains true today. I am a Ball State graduate and have lived in seven different Midwestern cities. I spend much of my time cheering on my daughter on the soccer field and my son during his fishing tournaments. When I am not doing that, I love a good fiction book and sitting outside on my patio.

Response-to-Instruction (RtI)
RtI is a general education initiative designed to provide high quality instruction and interventions matches to student needs, and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions. The RtI model is based on a three-tiered model of service delivery with a focus on early intervention and prevention of academic and behavioral concerns. Data collected during this process provides valuable information regarding students’ educational progress and response to interventions. Students who do not demonstrate a response to well-implemented, scientifically-based interventions at the Tier 3 level would be referred for an educational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education. RtI is a component of HSE’s Child Find Process.
SCREENAGERS - GROWING UP IN THE DIGITAL AGE
Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that happening with her own kids and began a quest to uncover how it might impact their development. As with her other two award-winning documentaries on mental health, Ruston takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and also offers solutions on how adults can empower their kids to best navigate the digital world to find balance.
SCREENAGERS addresses the most pervasive parenting issue of our time head on—depicting teen struggles over social media, video games and internet addiction. The film empowers kids to best navigate the digital world and provides practical resources to help them do it.
The showing will take place at HSE High School on September 17th at 6:00pm
