Physical Education with Mr. Abel and Mr. Sylvester
Happy New Year from your CCES Phys Ed team. As we reflect on 2017 and look forward to 2018 we talked to the students about New Year’s Resolutions. We heard everything from “that’s when they shoot fireworks” to “setting goals to something you want to accomplish”. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has some great ideas for kids of all ages.
For all kids:
1. Talk to a parent or trusted adult when you need help or are scared.
2. Never give private information or send pictures over the internet.
Preschoolers:
1. Wash hands after going to the bathroom and before eating.
2. Pick up toys after playtime.
3. Brush teeth twice a day.
Kids 5-12 years old:
1. Only drink soda and sugary drinks at special times.
2. Drink reduced fat milk and water every day.
3. Wear sunscreen when you are outside.
4. Be nice to other kids especially those who are new to your school.
Kids 13 and older:
1. Take care of yourself through physical activity and proper nutrition.
2. Resist peer pressure to try tobacco, alcohol or drugs.
3. Volunteer to help in the community.
4. Don’t use a cellphone or text while driving.
All kids: Be active at least 60 minutes a day!
Art with Mrs. Steffensen and Mrs. S. Miller
CCE Artists are back in action-literally! Fifth Graders are creating paper sculptures in the style of artist Keith Haring. Along with Fourth Grade’s foil sculptures, we are looking at ways of creating action poses in three dimensions. Third Grade will be looking forward to working with clay after a short origami lesson. Our Kindergarten, First and Second Grade artists are beginning their printmaking units. They will use a monoprinting process-think dip and stamp-to create a unique work of art specific to each grade level.
Fulton County Art teachers recently spent a day of Professional Development at the High Museum of Art. Along with the chance to learn from our peers, the day reminded us that we are fortunate here in Atlanta to have a world class art museum. We encourage you to experience art with your children-observing and discussing art everywhere you find it. And creating things together isn’t just about making art. It’s about making memories, too!
Thank you as always for your support!

LEADERSHIP TRAIT
Our activity winner for December was Andrew Toth! Congrats, Andrew! This month our Leadership Trait is Curiosity. This means you want to learn more. Make sure your child completes the Curious About Careers scavenger hunt and turns it in to our new Leadership Trait Dropbox located at the front office.
Music with Mr. DeStefano and Mrs. A. Williams
Several students have asked if they can join Chorus for the second half of the school year and the answer is YES! Any 4th or 5th graders who are interested in joining Chorus should pick up a sign up letter from Mr. DeStefano. New students may join us at Thursday rehearsals starting on February 1st.
The rest of the school year is shaping up to be a busy one full of concerts and music activities for all of our students. Keep checking this newsletter for monthly updates on what is happening.
