How to Apply, Entrance Exam Information & How to Study
Entrance Exam Date Set for 2024-2025 Applicants
Monday, 04/29/24 or Tuesday, 04/30/24
Check in begins at 4:30 pm
Testing begins at 5:00 pm and ends at 6:30 pm
In-person ONLY on the Campus of Jordan High School
The exam will take place in the Jordan High School 9th Grade Cafeteria. Enter the school building on the East Side (this is the side of the building near the Performing Arts Center). The door you will enter through is by the bus lane. There will be someone to check you in at the entrance.
Please note that there are a limited number of spaces available for the 2024-2025 team.
There will be no other opportunities to join the team until the Spring of 2025.

Entrance Exam Preparation Workshop
on
Monday, March 25th
4:30-6:00 pm
in the JHS Small Cafeteria
for any students who are interested in becoming a part of the 2024-2025 team.
This is not a commitment to taking the Entrance Exam but may help you in deciding if Science Olympiad is right for you and help you prepare for the Entrance Exam.

APPLICATION STEPS & REQUIREMENTS
APPLICATION DEADLINE - TUESDAY, APRIL 9TH
STEP 1 - FILL OUT APPLICATION
You must have a snapshot of your 2023-2024 Year to Date grades from Home Access Center ready to upload in order to complete the application. The grade snip MUST include your name. Double-check your image to make sure it is clear and contains your name. You will need to submit grades for the entire school year to date (1st-4th six-week grading periods). Don't start the application process until you have the grades for the 1st - 4th six-week grading periods ready to upload. This should be done in one file. If you do not know how to do this, please watch the How to Screenshot HAC Grades Video.
Be sure to name your file as follows: Your Last Name_Your First Name_Grades (example: Smith_John_Grades).
You must also be ready to select the tests you plan to take when you apply and you may not change your choices.
STEP 2 - AQUIRE A TEACHER RECOMMENDATION
If you have not participated in Science Olympiad, please forward the link below to only your CURRENT Science Teacher (We only need to receive 1 recommendation for you).
Coach/Teacher recommendations are due no later than Friday, April 12th.
Your coach/teacher is instructed on the recommendation form to forward the submission acknowledgment page to you after he/she completes the recommendation. If you do not hear from your coach/teacher by the deadline, it is your responsibility to follow up with him/her.
We will not confirm if a recommendation has been received. You will not be considered for the team until a teacher recommendation is received. Give your teacher and/or coach plenty of notice to complete the recommendation form.
STEP 3 - PREPARE FOR THE EXAM
BELOW IS HOW THE ENTRANCE EXAM IS STRUCTURED
You will select 3 exams to take from the 5 science categories listed below. Each exam will last 25 minutes. You are to answer as many questions on each exam as possible in 25 minutes. You will be required to choose your 3 exams at the time you apply and you may NOT change your selection after it is made.
READ THE RULES FOR EACH EVENT CAREFULLY. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO BRING ALL ITEMS PERMITTED IN THE RULES (except a partner...LOL). EACH ITEM BROUGHT MUST STRICTLY FOLLOW THE RULES. ANY DEVIATIONS FROM THE RULES WILL EITHER RESULT IN A POINT PENALTY OR THE ITEM NOT BEING PERMITTED FOR USE.
PLEASE NOTE THAT FOR EVENTS THAT ALLOW BINDERS, YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO UTILIZE AN ELECTRONIC BINDER SINCE PRINTING AN ACTUAL BINDER WILL BE COST-PROHIBITIVE. YOUR ELECTRONIC BINDER SHOULD BE AVAILABLE THROUGH YOUR SCHOOL GOOGLE FOLDER. WE WILL HAVE CHROMEBOOKS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR USE. YOU MAY NOT USE YOUR OWN DEVICE. THE ONLY RESOURCE YOU CAN ACCESS IS YOUR ELECTRONIC BINDER IN YOUR SCHOOL GOOGLE DRIVE. STRICT GUIDELINES FOR USE AND EXTREMELY CLOSE MONITORING OF USE WILL BE IN PLACE.
NO OTHER MATERIALS WILL BE PROVIDED FOR YOU AT THE TIME OF TESTING. IF YOU DO NOT BRING MATERIALS PERMITTED BY THE RULES WITH YOU, YOU WILL BE AT A DISADVANTAGE TO INDIVIDUALS WHO READ AND FOLLOWED THE RULES.
ALL TESTS WILL FOLLOW THE RULES ATTACHED BELOW.
CATEGORY 1 - BIOLOGY
CATEGORY 2 - CHEMISTRY
For the General Chemistry Entrance Exam, students will complete a written test on the principles of chemistry. There will not be a wet lab section for either the chemistry lab or the forensics section. Resources to help you study are available on the Science Olympiad National Site. Students who stand out on the entrance exam will go beyond these resources as they prepare for this exam.
CATEGORY 3 - PHYSICS
For the General Physics Entrance Exam, students will complete a written test on the principles of geometric and physical optics and demonstrate an understanding of Stellar Evolution. Resources to help you study are available on the Science Olympiad National Site. Students who stand out on the entrance exam will go beyond these resources as they prepare for this exam.
CATEGORY 4 - EARTH SCIENCE
For the General Earth Science Entrance Exam, students will complete a written test on the principles of geology and demonstrate an understanding of Earth processes. Resources to help you study are available on the Science Olympiad National Site. Students who stand out on the entrance exam will go beyond these resources as they prepare for this exam.
CATEGORY 5 - BUILDS
IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO THE BUILD PORTION, YOU WILL PICK ONLY ONE OTHER EXAM TO TAKE
Students will complete a test based on the principles of renewable energy, build a wind power device, and create a tower. Click here for all the specific rules and setups.
The Build Category will last 50 minutes and is divided into 2 Sessions:
- Session 1 - Device Testing (25 minutes)
- You will test a wind power device that you make at home and bring with you. (10-15 min.)
- You will test a tower device that you make at home and bring with you. (10-15 minutes)
- Session 2 - Renewable Energy Written Exam (25 minutes)
In addition to completing the 2 sessions above, you will also need to take one Category 1 - 4 exam of your choosing.
Here is a sample schedule:

Additionally, we try to keep a balance of approximately the same number of students per grade level.
