February 2019 Issue
A message from the principal:
We are into our second semester and each time I see our students I feel as though we are just meeting. With the numerous snow days it seems we haven’t fallen into our school routines. Students and teachers are still getting to know one another and we have had many new faces join us. I am hopeful that each student has a connection with an adult in the building. If you feel that this may not be the case please reach out to me. We have mentor groups, a wonderfully kind student support coach, an open-door policy counselor, and every staff member willing to be that person that a student can go to. If you know of a student that may be struggling, in need of something, or a connection please let us know. Our goal is for each student to feel safe, supported, cared about, and academically challenged.
During the coming months we will be implementing our safety training and thought that the information previously sent would be helpful for your understanding.
ALICE TRAINING INFO
Info Previously Shared by Central Office
Last spring, our district made an important investment in our commitment to school safety and security when we partnered with The ALICE Training Institute to provide our students and staff with the gold standard of crisis response training. The ALICE protocol empowers students with proactive, options-based strategies (“Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate”) and increases survivability of a potential mass-casualty incident.
On Monday, January 21, all district staff members were engaged in ALICE simulation trainings facilitated by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team in partnership with our School Safety Task Force.
Next Steps
The next step in the ALICE training process in to educate our students in the protocols we’ve learned. We are taking our time to make sure this process is well thought out. We have been consulting with other schools that have already made the transition to ALICE to ensure we have a plan that helps our entire community feels safe and informed. We will roll out our implementation plan with parents and students over several weeks in February and March.
Here are some things that we are working on to help with the transition to ALICE.
District communication to all parents about training protocols (separate guidelines for elementary and secondary) and tips for talking with their children prior to ALICE introduction at school.
Communication from principals to all parents with specific building training dates.
School Safety Task Force ALICE presentation to Board of Education (open to public)
Introduction of ALICE protocols to students with age-appropriate, multi-tiered training plan.
Our planning team will reconvene next week to finalize the training plan, and it will be communicated to stakeholders in early February.
