Brown Bears
Your Weekly Update from Brown Elementary School
Principal's Message
Dear Families,
Next week is vacation and there is no school. I hope you all enjoy your February break and have an opportunity to spend time with your family doing the things you love to do. I will be out of the building and will be returning on Februrary 27th. I will be responding to e-mails at that time. Have a wonderful week!
Best,
Aidan McCann, Principal
Five Things You Need to Know
1 - DISTRICT REPORT CARD
Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school’s report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas. Please click on this link to read more about our school and district report card.
2 - BLACK HISTORY MONTH
February marks Black History Month, a tradition that got its start in the Jim Crow era and was officially recognized in 1976 as part of the nation's bicentennial celebrations. It aims to honor the contributions that African Americans have made and to recognize their sacrifices. Here at Brown, I have shared a list of texts that teachers can read with students about Black history and the contributions of African Americans. Feel free to look over this list and read some at home!
2 - **UPDATE** NPS PARENT ORIENTATION NIGHT- THURSDAY MARCH 30TH, @7:00PM
Virtual Live Stream on YouTube with Elementary School Principals
Parents of incoming Kindergarten students are invited to meet with the Elementary School Principals to learn more about the Kindergarten onboarding process, overall curriculum goals, and how Natick Public Schools works to support its youngest learners. Principals will discuss the orientation process (parent orientation, student assessment, and student orientation) and the modifications in place to support safety at school. Also discussed will be programming and services and the calendar of important events. This evening will help you prepare for your child’s transition into kindergarten. Building-based meetings will be hosted in May to review building-specific procedures. Links will be shared via email closer to these dates.
4 - ELEMENTARY ENRICHMENT OPTIONS
The Elementary Enrichment Program runs for two 8-week sessions per year. This session we have courses offered at Ben-Hem, Brown, Johnson, Lilja and Memorial. Classes are designed and led by NPS staff and focus on hands-on exploration and collaborative fun and is open to students who attend the school at which each course is offered. Here is a link to their newsletter.
5 - MARCH MADNESS IS COMING
Every year we share 16 high-quality picture books with students that cover a range of topics; some fiction, some non-fiction, biography, and more. These books are all vetted for their quality story, their theme, excellent illustrations, and engaging nature. We use these texts in a format called the "March Madness Reading Competition" where students read and then vote on their favorite titles. We look forward to sharing titles with you in the near future. We will be having a school-wide assembly the week we come back from break to kick-off our competition.
All the best to our families,
Aidan McCann, Principal
