Advertisements permeate society. The symbols of large corporations are designed and refined to perfection until the symbol is representative of capitalism itself. Without design, this effect would not be possible. The brand would not be immediately recognizable. The golden arches would drive customers away, not bring them in. The repetition of the coke bottle caps represents this repetition in the real world and how it is present in all facets of society. This same technique was pioneered by Andy Warhol, an acclaimed modernist. He repeated soup cans, a symbol of the industrial movement that was taking over the United States. His piece, "100 Campell's Soup Cans" is pictured below. He painted them "because I used to drink it. I used to have the same lunch every day, for 20 years, I guess, the same thing over and over again. Someone said my life has dominated me; I liked that idea." The decrease in value, or shading, in the bottle caps represents the mass diffusion of the symbol throughout the world
