In the 1960's the United States and the Soviet Union began to compete to see which country could explore space first. This came to be known as the Space Race.

When the Soviet Union launched the satellite the sputnik into space news spread around the world about the Soviet's achievement. This was the beginning of the Space Race.

Yuri Gagarin
In 1961 Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet cosmonaut, orbited Earth once and became the first person to travel in space. This was important because this event caused the Soviets to "pull ahead" in the race.

Apollo 8 launch
The Apollo 8 was successfully launched and landed on the moon on July 16, 1969. The event is famously known for Neil Armstrong, one of the astronauts on the Eagle, saying "One small step for man, and one giant leap for mankind." This important achievement also lead to America starting to win in the Space race.
