Mental Health Matters
May is Mental Health Month, a time to focus on our emotional, social and psychological well-being. Mental Health month raises awareness of the importance of mental health and focuses on reducing the stigma that many experience.
In honor of this special month, we can take care of ourselves by practicing daily check-ins that consist of asking yourself: “ How am I feeling today”? And “What do I need today?” By asking ourselves these questions we are choosing to listen to our emotional needs. Just as our physical bodies have a special way of communicating what it needs, so do our emotions! Picture this, You are in class and you notice that your stomach is beginning to grumble and make growling noises. This is your body communicating to you that you are HUNGRY! Or, you notice the temperature drop and you quickly grab your coat— you feel cold!
Our emotional well-being works similarly. Our emotions have a way of communicating what we may need from ourselves or what we may need from others. Remember, asking for help is encouraged! It is okay to reach out for support when you need it. When we ask for help, we are honoring our needs. Just as checking in with ourselves is important, so is checking in on those around us. Encouraging others to seek support when needed can positively impact them!
What might you need today? Let’s check-in on our emotional well-being today!
Remember, you are not alone.
