JSMS JAM
Welcome James Scales!
Hello students & families,
It is an honor and privilege to be selected to help in Mr. Holt’s classroom for the next few weeks. I must say first and foremost that you all already have an outstanding teacher, who embodies an excellent approach to his classroom. My only objective is to ensure that same standard of excellence that is already in the Sevier 8th grade social studies department, as well as the school itself.
Secondly, to give you a background on myself, I recently just finished my Master of Education degree in curriculum and instruction from King University this past December. Prior to this, I also completed my undergraduate requirements from King with a concentration in political science & history. I have been an employee of KCS the past two years as the 9th grade boys basketball coach, and have also worked as an instructional assistant.
Moreover, I look forward to working with everyone. I hope that my colleagues would say that my style of teaching is resplendent, thought provoking, and most importantly, a secure classroom where students feel free to learn. It is an honor to be apart of the Warrior family!

Nextera Exposure - March 18
This applies to any staff member that will be involved with TNReady testing in April 2019. Please make sure you read and understand the expectations and requirements from the TDOE.
Michael Hubbard attended state training this past week and learned that the state is expecting every student and test administrator to participate in a practice test on the Nextera platform. The state wants to ensure that students and test administrators have exposure and familiarity with the platform prior to taking the science field test in April.
I will send more details out soon, but every staff member involved with testing needs to ensure that they are able to see the platform as students access Nextera. Everyone involved with testing will need to join a grade level classroom on one of the following dates below. By default, grade level teachers will see the platform during their grade level's assigned time. Related Arts Teachers, SPED Teachers, Instructional Assistants, Counselors, and anyone else that is involved in testing needs to join one of the options below to ensure that we are meeting expectations set forth by the state. This should take around 20 minutes.
- Monday, March 18 @ 7:50 AM
- 6th Grade
- Monday, March 18 @ 2:10 PM
- 7th & 8th Grades will report to 1st period during Tribe Time.
I will be sending out more information later this week. While this is a requirement from the state, we are working to make this as stress-free as possible. This will be a very low-key activity to complete. Students will be completing a Social Studies practice test on the Nextera platform. We are not concerned about students' content knowledge. Students simply need familiarity with the online testing platform.
Duty and Supervision Action Team Report
- It is an expectation that you will be at your duty at the assigned day and time. This is happening for the vast majority of you, but we have noticed that this can be an issue from time to time. We will be watching this more closely and will send an email directly to the teacher who is not on duty. Please be aware that this will be documented toward your professionalism at the end of the year.
- When you are absent, we need you to make arrangements to have your duty covered. Subs should not be covering your duty. A suggestions was made to work it out in advance with a partner teacher to cover for each other and to notify with a quick text when you are out. Whatever you plan, you need to make sure you have the duty covered. This also applied to lunch and hall/bathroom duty. All locations are essential for supervision and we will be held liable if there is not coverage due to negligence and an incident happens in that area.
- Morning duty is 7:15-7:35. Please make morning plans so that you show up on time and plan to stay until 7:35 at your duty location. Afternoon duty is 2:45-3:05. On duty days, you will need to plan to have a quick exit out of your classroom to be at your duty location on time.
I have included links to our duty schedules below for your reference. They are also available in the JSMS shared drive. It is the work of all of us that contributes to making Sevier a great place to work and a safe place for our students to learn. Thank you all for all that you do!
