Tuesday Times
Havelock North Primary School 29th June 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou,
We are seeing some good progress with the internal admin demolition and the outside addition. The footing for this addition will be laid tomorrow. A reminder that the temporary administration area is through the blue door next to Room 13. Thank you!
Thank you to those whānau from both HNP and Te Mata School who were able to attend the Balance is Better presentation run by Sport Hawke's Bay last night. It was really informative and hopefully we will be able to upload this presentation to our website so everyone can get these key messages. Thank you to Erica Cranswick for coordinating this evening.
On the first day of Term 3, we will have a Powhiri for the students who are starting on the first day of term. This will be a scaled-down version, as we will be using the school hall, so only some classes will make up the Tangata Whenua. This Powhiri is open to all whānau who have joined our school after the school year started. At the conclusion there will be a morning tea in the hall. We would love to see you there.
School reports will come home at the end of next week. These are a progress report and they will be followed up by Learning Conferences in Week 2 of Term 3. The link to book these interviews will come out in next week's edition of the Tuesday Times.
Have a great week everyone.
Ngā mihi

Enviro Poem by Liza Room 26
We're killing this planet that we all call home.
it's dying, it's bleeding, it's calling for help
just think of one person that's making a difference
that tries to persuade other people to listen
let's try to recycle more of these plastics
only 9% of them are actually recycled
We're chopping down rainforests where animals live
we plant palm trees all over instead
we need all this palm oil to make all this feast
and all this everyday food that we always eat
the global temperature is rising
We cause climate change and no one is helping
we're gonna die soon and already feel it
as we breathe in carbon and breathe out the same
we do have heaps of endangered species
as we are polluting our forests and trees
we do exactly the same to our world’s huge oceans
and that's just not fair to the Earth we don't deserve
heaps of people just don't care
they're living their life nothing much really
we spent heaps of energy that we get from fossils
and all these dead creatures we killed in the past
let's try to save this beautiful planet
this planet deserves more than it gets
Matariki Evening at Havelock North High School
HAVELOCK NORTH SCHOOLS' MATARIKI CELEBRATION
A special Matariki celebration involving HNHS, HNI, Haumoana, Lucknow, Te Mata and our school is being held at Havelock North High School in the quad area from 5.00 - 7.00 pm on Tuesday 6th July.
Our HNPS Kapa Haka is performing at 5.40 pm and these students are asked to be there by 5.15 pm to warm up. Kapa Haka students are to wear school uniform, please. We will provide headbands. We will be shown to the classroom where we can warm up with Whaea Robin, Mrs Field and Mrs Wilkins. Children can be collected from that room after our item is over.
At 5 pm there is a karakia to open the event.
Available from 5 pm onwards:
- Food stalls (cash only - no eftpos) with sausage sizzle, hamburgers, Hangi, Haumoz scones, hot chocolate and slice
- Artwork from all contributing schools will be on display in the library
- Face painting
- Telescopes
Parking will be available in the main school carpark, along the back of the school and street parking.
If it is wet, it will be held in the HNHS gym.
To give back to our community, we ask that students bring a can or any food item (non-perishable) to our school by next Monday so we can prepare a hamper to donate to Women's Refuge. Please bring these items to your class teacher and they will be collected from there.
We look forward to seeing you at the Matariki celebration at the high school next week!

Whakataukī - Weeks 6-10
Resilience / Manawaroa :
Kia mate ururoa, kei mate wheke
Fight like a shark, don’t give in like an octopus
This whakataukī encourages us to not give up. When fishing, a shark will fight the whole time it is on the line. In comparison, an octopus will surrender once it’s been hooked. No matter how hard things get, let us fight like a shark.

Balance is Better info evening
The main take-aways were
1: Childhood success is not a reliable predictor of future success.
2: Identifying athletes early and early specialisation is taking its toll and leading to burnout / walking away from sport altogether.
3: A focus on winning rather than development is a problem.
Some of the things we can be doing to promote their love of sport are
1: allow them to play multiple sports
2: don't have them doing more hours of organised sport than their age
3: for every hour of organised sport they should be doing half an hour of adult-free play
