Springtime Recess
Changes to the Implementation of Soccer
This communication is to address concerns that our entire learning community has had with soccer during recess. We have multiple areas of our schoolyard for students to have fun and the soccer fields are the area that continues to have incidents. There has been an overflow of competition on our three soccer fields during recess. We limit the amount of players and staff make the teams, yet we still have concerns.
We take this seriously, as the following has occurred:
- Excessive health office visits due to accidental or intentional contact (pushing, slide tackles, hit with the soccer ball in face or body.)
- Argumentative behaviors that carry over into the halls and classrooms
- Significant unsportsmanlike conduct
- Students are bringing shin guards and cleats to school for recess soccer
- Students are arguing calls and demonstrating disrespectful language with the adult supervisors
- Students are stomping off the field unexpectedly because they are angry about a call or the game did not go their way
- Students are mocking, trash talking, and ridiculing peers for a soccer loss
- A population of students are not playing soccer due to the over competitiveness
Implementation of the District's Code of Conduct has been significantly implemented with limited improvement to behaviors. It has become essential to reconsider how soccer is implemented during recess.
The skill set ranges from novice to more experienced players, however, it is still playground recess soccer. To support students, their safety, and more equitable playing experiences, an updated schedule has been developed. For some families you may hear cheers tonight at the dinner table. For others, you may hear some groaning.
Three homerooms per week for each grade level will have access to the soccer fields. No other classes but the 3 highlighted that week are permitted at the soccer fields. If this revision does not improve the disposition and safety during recess, the removal of the soccer nets from the playground will be considered. Students were informed of these changes during their lunch period on Friday, April 12th. The changes begin Monday, April 15th. Continued support from our families is appreciated and valued.
