Junior/Senior Prom
The Urbana High School Junior/Senior Prom is scheduled for Friday, May 10th at the FSK Clarion Inn and Convention Center from 7-10pm.
Tickets will be on sale during all lunch shifts in the cafeteria and after school until 2:45 in A-151 from Monday, May 6- Wednesday, May 8. A link to purchase tickets will be available on School Cash Online starting May 3rd.
Students must present their signed permission form along with receipt from SCO, cash, or check at the time of ticket purchase.

The Urbana High School Choral and Band Programs final concert is May 2nd at 7pm in the auditorium. There is no cost for entry. Please join us in celebrating the hard work students have put into their performance throughout the year.
NHS
ATTENTION NHS SENIOR MEMBERS AND PARENTS:
A message was sent out on the NHS Schoology pages about NHS requirements
Please make sure all NHS senior students have viewed the spreadsheets posted on Schoology indicating if they have filled the following requirements:
- Filling out the NHS contract via google form - the deadline is way past due. Members need to see Dr. Dashiell as soon as possible.
- Payment of the 20.00 dues. SENIORS will not get their stole if dues are not paid.
- Ten service hours documented by filling in the PAPER form outside room B120. Service hours can be documented from May 2, 2023 to May 1, 2024. This means they are due May 1, 2024 (JUNIORS have until May 15, 2024).
- The graduation stole is FREE for returning members (in NHS both junior and senior years).
- The graduation stole is $20.00 for seniors who were in NHS only for their senior year. Look for a school cash online by next week. Payment is due by May 5th.
- SENIORS - If you have fulfilled all of these requirements, then you may pick up your graduation stole in Dr. Dashiell's classroom
SENIORS - If you do not fulfill your NHS requirements, you will not be eligible for your graduation stole, and nor will your name in the graduation program indicating that you were an NHS member. You must be an active member in good standing in order to eligible.

Volunteer Opportunity
Urbana Elementary School is having their Annual Strawberry Festival on:
Friday, May 17, 5:00-8:00pm.
They really need face painters, students to manage games, check-in and vending for the event and have requested a call for UHS students because you all did such an amazing job in past events.
If you have additional questions or need a service learning/ volunteer hours sheet please see or ask Mrs. Willett in Room F131.

Urbana Robotics Team
The Urbana High School Robotics Team, the CryptoHawks, is hosting a STEM night on May 17 from 4pm to 7:30pm for students in grades 3-5. Students will be building a bubble blower machine, that they will keep, do various STEM activities, eat pizza and have snacks, and get a chance to drive the team's 100 pound robot. UHS Envirothon Team
Urbana High School would like to extend congratulations to the UHS Envirothon Teams who placed 2nd, 4th and 7th in the local Envirothon Competition held at Cunningham Falls this past Tuesday. The 2nd Place Team includes juniors Hannah Lee, Avery Chen, Komal Gandhi, Agaana Pathmathevan and Rebekah Zhu. The 4th Place Team includes Avery Radwinsky, Greta Snyder, Catelyn Irish, Benson Zhang and Lilly Broder, and our 7th place team includes Ishaan Jaiswal, Shrestha Joardar, Alexis Park, Mandy Zhang and Eileen Kim. We are proud of their efforts!

Senior Class Information

As we quickly approach graduation, many seniors and their parents have questions about senior class end-of-year activities and about the graduation ceremony and practices. Please read the Class of 2024 Information Packet for important information, dates, locations, etc. to help you plan. Contact Ms. Beachley (ann.beachley@fcps.org) or Mr. Grover (chuck.grover@fcps.org) with any questions.
Any senior who will have a family member attending the graduation ceremony who will need special accommodations because they will need a wheelchair spot, can't climb steps, will need a sign language interpreter, etc. is asked to complete the Accessibility Request Form and return it to Ms. Holt (mardy.holt@fcps.org) by May 21. These spaces will be even more limited this year because of the size of the graduating class, so please be sure to return the form by May 21 so that we can properly accommodate all of our guests.

Senior Parent Meeting
The Senior Information Packet is available on the UHS website. The packet contains information concerning graduation practices, the Salute to Seniors Awards Program, and graduation.
Future Business Leaders of America
The Future Business Leaders of America took 63 Urbana Hawks to the State Leadership Conference in Ocean City this past week. The State Leadership Conference is where FBLA chapters from all over the state of Maryland send their best to compete and be judged in over 75 individual competitions ranging from Agribusiness to Web Design. Of the 63 Hawks that went, 56 achieved State Finalist status, and 28 of those State Finalists placed high enough in the state to be immediately advanced to FBLA Nationals, which is set to take place in Orlando Florida at the end of June. We are so proud of our FLBA chapter here at UHS-- one of the five largest chapters in the entire state of Maryland!

Citizens Advisory Council
The Citizens Advisory Council (CAC) serves as a conduit to the Board of Education for public concerns, advice, and information. An email, CAC@fcps.org, has been established for community members, parents/guardians, students, and staff who wish to share concerns, topics of interest, and/or issues with the CAC. Topics raised in these communications will be discussed by the Council and then relayed to Board leadership.

Monroe Center Open House
Attention Current Dual Enrollment Students:
Due to MCAP, IB, and AP testing, the Media Center will be closed starting April 29.
For students who typically use the Media Center on days without classes or for online courses, please note the following alternative locations during non-class blocks:
Block 1 & 2: Back Left of the Cafeteria
Block 3: School Counseling Office Conference Room
Block 4: Back Left of the Cafeteria
Students are reminded to adhere to the guidelines outlined in the dual enrollment participation form and refrain from wandering around the school building during non-class blocks.
Please note that the last day for FCC courses is May 10. As per the dual enrollment participation form, students enrolled in FCC courses are not required to report to the building on days when their class is not in session.

IEC Chesapeake Electrical Internship Information
The student candidate:
● Is a rising senior (current junior), on track to graduate May 2025
● Will begin this program the summer before their senior year.
● Will work 4 mornings per week. Approximate start time is 6:00 am.
● Will attend instruction at the Frederick Community College (FCC) - Monroe Center on the 5th day of the
week.
● Will return to high school after work or instruction each day in order to complete graduation
requirements.
● Has a driver’s license or will obtain one by the start of senior year
● Is committed to working in skilled electrical trades and ready to complete a 4 year electrical
apprenticeship resulting in an electrical journeyworker license.
● Will be prepared to pass an employer initiated drug test, including THC. (Medical marijuana card holders
are not exempt)

● After students complete their application they will complete a Math and Reading assessment, the link will be
emailed to the student by IEC Chesapeake (basic math and reading skills, not an SAT test)
● Then IEC Chesapeake will conduct a phone interview
● After the phone interview, IEC Chesapeake will try to match students with an IEC Chesapeake member employer.
- Employers will require a drug test.*
● Admission into the program is only guaranteed once placed with an employer
● Students will be notified of before the end of their junior year and will work through the summer and continue
into their senior year until graduation
● Apprentices are enrolled in Frederick Community College and earn credits awarded at the end of a successful
4-year apprenticeship

Engineering Innovation
Are you interested in learning more about Engineering? See the attached flyer for information regarding John Hopkins University Explore Engineering Innovation summer program for HS students.
JHU is offering 3 different options this year: Exploring Engineering, Biomedical Engineering Innovation, and Sustainability Energy Engineering. Classes are held over the summer at either Hood College, Johns Hopkins University, or virtually. This is an amazing opportunity for students to earn 3 JHU credits and one high school CTE elective credit. Students will have the opportunity to learn, think, and problem solve like an engineer while applying the math and science concepts they have learned in high school.
This program is for Rising 11th and 12th graders. Prerequisites include: Algebra II, some Trigonometry, and a lab science.

Attention Juniors-
Interested in applying to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute? Please see the Rensselaer Medal, a merit scholarship. A value of $120K and is guaranteed for 4 years. You are nominated by UHS.
Criteria-
· Be ranked within the top 10% of their class
· Be a high school junior
· Excel in advanced math and science courses
· Have completed chemistry, biology, lab-based physics, and at least four years of math, including precalculus by the end of high school*
· Demonstrate potential for success in a challenging academic setting
· Exhibit significant involvement in extracurricular activities
In less than 500 words please describe either by essay or bullet points how you help define and continue the scientific and technological advances of our world. What legacy would you leave in confronting the most pressing problems facing humanity and our planet. Finally, please submit a resume including leadership and activities. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
The Urbana High School Green Club would like to remind families that it is important to consider your waste management on a daily basis. Please continue to recycle at home. When packing school lunches, consider the use of a REUSABLE container or lunch bag! We are composting and recycling in our cafeteria and classrooms this year. We will also be collecting your "bag of bags" to donate to our Trex Plastic Collection station. Stay tuned for more information.
SPANISH DANCE CLUB
Are you interested in learning a new dance? Want to try something new? Join Baile Baile today! Baile Baile is a club where students can learn (hopefully, perform in the future) Spanish dances such as bachata, merengue, salsa, etc. Anyone is able to join regardless of who they are (gender, age and race). Students can choose if they only want to learn or learn and perform. This club is a safe space for people to learn and come together as a community and to learn about the culture where Latin dance comes from! 1. $50 Soaring Hawk: Created for Alumni of UHS. Come back and join us for a game or two and support the teams that you created a legacy for!
2. $50 Hawk Nest: Created for our community supporters (grandparents, community neighbors and current families with students at UHS). Come out to our games and fill the stands with community spirit for Urbana!
3. $125 Future Hawk: Created for families with elementary and/or middle school students that will feed to UHS. This level comes with VIP food pass**see below for more info). Food pass good for the entire year!
4. $250 Hawk Club: Created as the highest level with VIP food pass** and parking pass* (see below for more info). VIP parking close to the stadium and a food pass for use at every game! Food and Parking pass good for the entire year! This level is perfect for a family with a student athlete at UHS. Two stadium seats given as your gift of membership.

Annual Student Season Pass – Allows entrance to individual student for all home games for the 23-24 school year. Excludes playoffs.
Winter/Spring Family Pass – Allows entrance for up to 6 family members to all home games for the winter and spring seasons. Excludes playoffs. Starts December 4, 2023, and ends May 20, 2024.
