Community Connections
We’re already beginning to plan for more virtual clubs in the Spring! Be on the lookout for a schedule in December. We’re continuing to have wonderful turn-outs to the clubs, we hope your kiddos are enjoying them and building community in some way.
Check out the Community Connections section in the Cabrillo Point Academy Family Resource Website (log-in required) where you will find a How-to video and the Club Hub with all the virtual clubs we offer. You can always reach out to your Homeschool Teacher (HST) who has all the information to pass on to you as well.
Please use the hashtag #cpavirtualclubs to tag your photos on social media because we all LOVE seeing what your kids are doing in the clubs!

From Your Intervention Team: Grade Level Tips on Fun Ways to Fill the Learning Gaps This Week First Grade
Math:
Play a less than/more than game. Get creative with the counters….I’m thinking candy corn! Click here for game instructions.
I can use different strategies for addition to solve word problems (within 20.)
I can use different strategies for subtraction to solve word problems (within 20.)
Integrate math and art (they really do go together great) with some addition art projects. Directions here.
I can use addition facts I know well to help me solve problems where there are more than two numbers (associative.)
Or take a break and watch a Math Facts Youtube Video

Language Arts:
Make spelling words fun, and a little messy. Instead of writing words on paper, spray some shaving cream on a window or mirror and let your child write their words there.
I can use sight words and spelling patterns to help me spell words correctly.
There are free resources on websites like Teachers Pay Teachers to help your child become a voracious reader. Try reading across the genres to create a well rounded reader.
I can read and understand first grade books.
Listen to a silly and not too spooky read aloud on YouTube called, Creepy Pair of Underwear.
I can read aloud like a teacher.
Also, did you know that our school has a website with videos and tools all linked and prerecorded if your student is having trouble in math, reading, or writing?
Outstanding Direct Instruction (ODI)
Is your child in the 5th grade or higher?
Did your child score in the red on the STAR360?
Would your child benefit from small group instruction?
If you answered yes to those questions, your child may be eligible for Outstanding Direct Instruction (ODI) in math or reading.
ODI is a live, on-line, small group program offered by our Student Services department. In reading, we will focus on comprehension and vocabulary development strategies and skills. In math, classes include multiplication up through multi-step problems. The commitment is for 4 weeks, 2 times per week for 45 minutes per class. Classes are conducted on Mondays - Thursdays. ODI is free for enrolled, eligible students.

Homeschooling Advice
7 Ways Homeschooling is Like Training for a Marathon
"A number of years ago, Walt Disney World marathon was celebrating its 15th anniversary with a special finisher’s medal that I wanted. I had never run a race before. In fact, I had never run a single mile. But I firmly believed I could run a 26.2 mile race. Crazy, huh?
At some point my husband and I verbalized another seemingly impossible idea — what if we don’t send our kids to school and instead we teach them at home? Again, crazy.
Along the way, I’ve realized that much of what I learned while preparing for and running a marathon relates directly to our homeschooling journey.
1. You Need a Plan
With both the marathon and homeschooling, I committed to a huge goal with no idea where to begin. So I began to read and read and then research some more to formulate a basic plan. I bought curriculum. Then I jumped in.
Without a plan, you’re sunk. It’s too easy to get distracted and miss things along the way. Even though the plan will change, having one will ensure you stay on task and true to your vision."
