SFA Updates from Jen Hartman (Jefferson's SFA Facilitator)
Thank you Jefferson families for the reading support you are providing your child and for partnering with us to ensure they are growing as a reader! We will begin reassessing our students next week to see the growth they have made throughout the third quarter. When we regroup into new SFA groups for the next quarter, we NEVER base those groups on one piece of data. We utilize daily classroom data, SFA assessment data, and non-SFA benchmark assessment data (Fastbridge). No single test or data point determines your child's growth and next group placement. We look forward to sharing this information with you in a letter that will come home on Monday April 1 (the first day of our fourth quarter SFA groups). This letter will have more information communicated to you so you know what your child has mastered as well as where your child will be instructed next. Equally important as we have always shared, your child's SFA Reading teacher contact information will be included. At any point please call/email your child's SFA Reading teacher or myself (920) 686-9387 - SFA Facilitator, with concerns, questions, or if you would like more information. (Please note - the phone numbers provided in the letters do not have texting capabilities.) We are happy to invite you in and ensure you are informed.
SFA School-Wide Goals for 3rd Quarter
Attendance Team: Students will be in attendance at least 93% of 3rd Quarter. This means that students canNOT miss more than 2 days during the quarter.
Cooperative Culture Team: Our goal is to increase the number of students who are domonstrating the weekly GAT cooperative challenges. We will start with classes reaching 20 GAT Challenges in a 2 week period.
Parent & Family Involvement Team: Our goal is to have at least 300 students and families attend our various events.
READ AND RESPONSE
Read and Respond sheets are sent home weekly on Monday. Students are expected to read 20 minutes for four nights in 1st-5th grade. Sheets are due the following Monday. This is to give students more flexibility to use the weekend to read. Students in Roots classes should be reading the provided books. Wings students can read choice books but will need to provide a short reaction from the reader. Both groups should be reading to someone.
Notes from Mrs. Delsman
What happens if my child grows in reading during Quarter 3?
Great question! EVERY SINGLE student who increases their reading during the 3rd Quarter will be celebrated. Our Jefferson Community (i.e. students, families, staff) are working so hard that I feel that every student at Jefferson should show growth in their reading! Thank you for hard work and continued efforts to help your children at home. It takes a village!
NO wheels of any kind on our turf!
We don't want our field to look like this.😔

Notes from Medical Visits
Medications at School
Does your child require prescription medication to be given at school? If so, these are the guidelines that the office staff must follow:
A “Consent to Administer Medication to be Given at School” form, must be signed by both parent and doctor noting the name of the medication, dosage amount and time of day it is to be administered. You can pick up a form in the office or find it on the District website under Nursing Services>Parent Forms.
All medication must be in the original container with the original prescription label on the container, which will be kept locked in the office health room. School personnel will dispense all medication.
Do not send medication to school with your child. Students are not allowed to be in possession of medicine at any time.
Please notify the school office immediately when the medication is discontinued. If the dosage is changed, a new form must be completed.

Why do people lie?
One of our School-Based Mental Health Providers wanted to share this article as an informative measure of a possible topic in which children and families may struggle with.
Lying can be very frustrating. As providers, parents, or supports we may get very frustrated when people lie, but lying serves a purpose. When a child lies, the reason for the lie matters more than that they lied. Before the age of three, children think that what they know everyone knows. Once children learn that peers and adults aren’t mind readers, lying may occur to test the limits and experiment with this new skill.
Commons reasons people lie include but are not limited to:
- Do not want to give up control
- Looking for a specific reaction from others
- Do not want to disappoint others
- Are attempting to cover up another lie
- Belief in what they are saying to be true
- The lie is what they would like to see happen.
It is important to remember that even if a lie feels pointless to you, it serves some purpose to that person.
Lies can be dangerous as they can cover up harm, can keep someone from getting the help they need, and can damage relationships or trust with others. It is important to remember, honesty is a default and those who tell frequent lies still are honest most of the time. Understanding the reason for a lie and supporting that person are the best supports when you catch someone in a lie.

Reporting Your Child's Absence
If your child will be absent from school. please make sure to call the Jefferson Attendance Line at (920) 663-9529.
All students are expected to be in attendance each day school is in session. Reasons for which students may be absent: Illness (fever of 100 or above, vomiting, diarrhea, serious contagious illness) Family emergency or tragedy Trip with parents provided absence has been arranged in advance with the school principal by parents. (Please prearrange with the office) Medical or dental appointment (Bring Doctor's Note) Recognized cultural observance or service If your child is going to be absent, please call our 24 hour Jefferson attendance line at 920-663-9529. This will allow you to leave a message at any time. If a call is not received by 9:00 AM, the office personnel will send a robocall to remind you to call and verify the absence State law requires the Manitowoc Public School District to enforce the regular attendance of students. Wisconsin Act 285 defines a “habitual truant” as “a pupil who is absent from school without an acceptable excuse for part or all of five school days during a semester.” Per the state law, students are not allowed more than 10 absences in a school year. Families whose student exceeds the designated number of allowed absences will receive attendance letters in the mail and we will request that you participate in an attendance problem-solving meeting where we will work through each family situation.
