I 💗 SG❗
Have a Great Week!
I want to say a huge thank you on behalf of our entire Silver Gate Staff for all of the love you and your families showed us during Staff Appreciation Week! Our buckets are positively overflowing and our hearts are bursting from all of the kind words and gestures. We have an incredible staff of teachers, special educators, paraeducators, custodial staff, and office staff who work together each and everyday to help make this the best elementary school it can be and we appreciate all of you!
Mom's Night Out!
Caps for Kids - Monday, May 23rd
This year our school will participate in Caps for Kids’ Cap Day, benefitting children across the country who are battling cancer. Caps for Kids is a national nonprofit organization that puts smiles on the faces of children with cancer by providing them with a ball cap autographed by their favorite athlete, actor, singer or other notable person of their choice.
To a child who loses their hair as a result of cancer treatment, a cap signed by their hero gives them strength, fills them with courage, and makes them feel special, as though their celebrity cap hero is right there beside them in every treatment rooting for them.
To participate, bring $1 to school on Monday, May 23rd. There will be donation boxes at each gate. As a thank you, you and your students will be able to wear your favorite cap at school all day long!
MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS MONTH
The stress, isolation, and uncertainty of living through a pandemic has taken a toll on the well-being of many people, including our students, families, and staff.
This Guide to May is Mental Health Matters Month was created by our District Wellness Council Social-Emotional Subcommittee.
The Mental Health Matters Week of Student Activities is May 23-26.
Here is a Family Guide to accompany the student activities week to encourage discussions about what students learned and to normalize conversations about mental health.

UPDATE for UTK CHOICE applications
We are sorry to say we are not anticipating any open Choice spots in our UTK class for next school year. Additionally if we have openings the district will fill them with overflow parents from other schools before filling the spots with children on the Choice list. We are suggesting that Choice parents put their names on the UTK eligibility list for their neighborhood schools just in case the district pulls in overflow students at some point

Level Up Summer Enrichment Programs
San Diego Unified will once again offer all students a summer of learning and joy with free classes, free camps, and free enrichment programs. Last year, more than 30,000 students took part in the program!
To complement the morning academic program, we have partnered with the San Diego Foundation and dozens of local nonprofit organizations to provide students with enrichment opportunities at no cost to families throughout the city.
Level Up Summer Enrichment Program registration begins Monday, May 2. The process and system for registration has changed for this summer and can be found HERE. IN THE STEAM LAB LAST WEEK!
TK/Kinder STEAM:
This week was our Habitat Design Challenge! Students chose an animal then designed its habitat on paper including food, water and shelter. They then used their design to build the habitat with LEGO. At the end of class, students did a gallery walk and admired each other’s creations.
1st Grade STEAM:
Light! Camera! Action! The auditorium came to life this week when our light scientists culminated their light unit by creating and starring in their own shadow puppet show. They used flashlights, their series characters and animal cut-outs on popsicle sticks for their performances. They also used a mini puppet theatre or background scenes that they created to share their shadow puppet show with their fellow classmates. Ask your child to share at home tonight!
2nd Grade Steam:
To deepen our understanding of pollination students dissected two different types of flowers looking closely at their distinct parts. Findings were recorded in their STEAM journals. Students then went outside for some field research documenting how many times they saw bees or butterflies land on the different flowers in our 2nd grade Bee and Butterfly garden J Next week we will explore photosynthesis!
3rd Grade STEAM:
This week in STEAM we explored the mystery, “Where do clouds come from?” Your child observed important clues, such as the fact that water changes from a liquid to a gas (even without boiling!). You can continue to support your child’s curiosity by pointing out water vapor whenever you see it rising off hot water in the kitchen or bath, or pointing out tiny droplets of water forming on a mirror, windows, or glasses. Engage their minds by asking, “Wow, why do you think this is happening?”
4th Grade STEAM:
This week in STEAM we have moved into our final unit of Life Science. Our topic was decomposers, aka, the clean up crew. BUGS, INSECTS, WORMS!!! Mealworms to be exact. Have you ever wondered what a baby beetle looks like? It actually does not look anything like a beetle in its baby stage. It looks just like a worm! This week they learned all about mealworms, how they live, and how they grow to become a beetle.
