The September Newsletter
The Start of the Year by the Numbers
We had 21 Making It Work classes come down to pick out independent reading books.
689 books were checked out to patrons in the first week.
Only 3 wicked smart teachers brought their classes down during the sweltering days to conduct class.
1 teacher has requested we pull curriculum resources (books, lots of books) for her classroom exploration on ancient man.
12 students/staff members returned their summer reading brochures, and read a total of 139 books this summer.
59 new records (books/magazines) have been added to our collection.
1 puzzle has already been completed, and 1 puzzle has already been abandoned (1,200 pieces is too many pieces).
9 books were "sold" at the Open House Book "sale" (we gave them away).
Mark Your Calendars
September 24-27th: Banned Book Week
November 5-9th: Fall Scholastic Book Fair (Staff gets 20% off)
November 13-19: Register for the Reading Marathon (New challenges will be available for those who want to shake it up).
SO MANY NEW BOOKS, SO LITTLE TIME!
Nonfiction Resources
High-Low Fiction
Though we have several of these kinds of books, I now have subscription through Junior Library Guild that will send us a new High-Low book each month. These books have engaging covers, interesting subject matter, but are written at a lower lexile. If you have a struggling reader, these would be perfect for them!

Looking for a Guest Presenter? Co-Teacher?
Making It Work classes are a great place for me to push in and introduce resources, teach research skills, launch a reading activity (more on this later), etc. However, I'd also be happy to sit down with you/your team to figure out if there is some way I can help enhance your content area learning experience, support your teaching goal, or just be a wing-man in the class when you are introducing a research project. In order to effectively co-teach, I would need some advanced notice of what the students are doing.
My Strengths:
- Resources (books, websites, databases)
- Research (evaluating websites, boolean search, creative commons)
- Citations
- MLA 8 Formatting
- Using Google Docs, Slides, Sites
- Using different apps./sites to create projects
- Book talking
- Writing support
Please let me know if you'd like to sit down and plan for some collaborative awesomeness.

Pink Passes Please (and a new sign in sheet)
Though we THRIVE on student energy, we must require students to have passes when they arrive. Two pink passes were placed in each teacher’s box at the start of the year. Some have already been lost and forgotten down here; those that had names, have been returned. If you need more, please let me know.
Also, and this is just an FYI, there is a new sign in sheet for students to use during EVERY period. This is hopefully going to allow us to have more documentation of students being where they say they are going!
Hannah and I thank you for enforcing the no pass- no library rule.
Newsela Pro is Here!
As the building administrator, I get access to fun data about building use and performance on Newsela Pro. Though this data is based on the VERY EARLY trial runs that a few brave teachers have conducted, I think that this information is incredibly interesting and can potentially help us use data to make informed decisions about our students going forward.
If you need help launching Newsela in your classrooms, please let me know. I can either walk you through it or come into your class and get your kids started! Below is a link to the Teacher Learning Hub that some people may find useful.
Let me know what you need.
