SLES Family Roar
Week 02/19 - 02/23
Wow!! Did you get a chance to see our Musical Theater Production, Frozen? If so, then I know you left in awe of our student’s incredible talent, our staff’s dedication, and our crew’s artistic ability! The costumes were colorful, the set was stunning, and the singing, acting, and dancing were top notch!! Thank you again to all who made this performance possible. Some students just need a stage underneath their feet.
We hope you all were able to join us this week at our FAST Spirit night at Roy Rogers this Tuesday, February 20, 2024. Thank you to our fabulous FAST team for organizing this fun event for our staff, students, and families!
This week visitors from the Maryland State Department came to tour our school and visit selected classrooms. Our visitors came from Howard County, Anne Arundel County, and Montgomery County just to name a few! The experts looked at our inclusive instructional practices, behavioral management, and goal setting. I am super proud to show off all of the amazing things we are doing at SLES that have resulted in huge growth for our staff and students!
We have already exceeded our school wide goal to have between 49%-58% of students reading on grade level! Currently 59% of our students are reading at or above grade level. Thank you families for your support at home – we cannot do all of these great things without you!!
A free Dental Screening/Sealant program is being offered at our school in partnership with Calvert Health. A dentist or dental hygienist will look at the child's teeth and decide which teeth need sealants. Sealants are quick to apply and do not cause any pain or discomfort. If the student has received dental sealants in the past, the dental team will check to ensure the sealant has remained intact on the tooth and then determine if any new teeth need sealants. This screening/limited exam is for the purpose of providing sealants to those children in need in order to help prevent tooth decay. X-rays will not be taken during this exam.
The clinic will be held 3/8/24 and parents will need to fill out forms and return them by 3/1/24.
I can’t wait for Spring to come so we can see even more growth in our students, staff, and families!
Respectfully,
Ms. Tammie Rudzinski
A Message from AP Williams
The winter months are difficult as cold and flu season are upon us with the added layer of COVID in the last few years. As parents, you may have questions about when to send your child/ren to school. Of course, we want all students healthy, happy, and ready to learn at school. Here are some helpful hints from the CCPS School Health Services Handbook. Please review the below link to help answer any questions on when to send you child/ren to school.

Dear Families, Teachers, and Staff:
I would like to encourage you to engage in a book study with me. We will be reading “Lost at School”, written by Ross W. Greene, Ph.D. This is one of his books that will reveal some of the behavioral approaches that he has produced through his life’s work. Calvert County School District has been training teams for quite a few years and we are embarking upon a train-the trainer model to increase the knowledge of these approaches to teachers and those who support our students across the county.
Please join me for this virtual “Koffee with Kendy” book study. Sessions will be held on the following Saturdays from 9-10am:
January 27th, 2024 – Chapters 1 & 2
February 3rd, 2024 – Chapters 3 & 4
February 10th, 2024 – Chapters 5 & 6
February 24th, 2024 – Chapters 7-9

Before we start with the book, I found this brief article from Alfie Kohn and I am providing a link so that you can review it before you begin reading “Lost at School”. Happy Reading and I look forward to a rich conversation.

HEART Felt (Feeding Empty Little Tummies)
This program is offered through some of our local churches. Your child is eligible to receive a small bag of food for the weekend each and every Friday. The food is provided to our students and families at NO additional cost. Contents will include a small meal/supplemental items and snacks for the weekend. Here at SLES we focus on building character by teaching character traits through the morning ROAR, community circles in the classroom, and teaching social emotional lessons. Students are encouraged to show the monthly character trait each and every day. At the end of the month a student is selected by their classroom teacher along with the help of their classmates.
Ms Bryant our school counselor, then takes their picture and displays it on the bulletin board outside of the main office. Students receive a Character Counts bracelet along with their picture and comments from their teacher. Be sure to check out the current character counts students next time you visit!
