From Mr. Bachmeier's Desk
I am happy to begin this month’s newsletter declaring that spring has sprung, and it looks like we have turned the corner with nicer weather upon us! It is hard to believe a year ago we were embarking on the pandemic and that school and the world as we knew it was going to change very drastically.
The month of March is sometimes looked at as a transition timeframe as we are gearing up for the final quarter of the school year and looking at what we are preparing for in the upcoming school year. Students have registered for the 2021-2022 school year, completed their ACT test, and state assessments are upon us. I believe this is an important exciting time to be a student and one in which you see the successes of your hard work and the future of your life coming to fruition! As an administrator, I have found this time of year to be very rewarding in witnessing our student’s excitement and intrigue into what it is our school can offer them, and I believe that we are truly preparing our students for tomorrow’s success.
Looking at the final quarter and the home stretch that we are entering, I often hear about spring fever and students can lose focus on what it is we are still trying to accomplish in the classroom. I ask for your help as parents in reiterating how important the last few months of school are and that we all work together to see the most success in our students as possible. I also ask that you please reiterate to your child the importance of driving safely and taking caution on the roadways. One of my biggest worries is student safety on the roadways, and spring is a time where I believe we need to be reminded to drive cautiously and safely.
Finally, this month’s quote comes from the great president John F. Kennedy, “Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength of the nation.” One of the goals we have as a school is to provide an education that helps grow our students into becoming productive citizens that lead our nation to become a better place as well!

Youth Risk Behavior Survey
Our school is taking part in the 2021 North Dakota Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and the 2021 North Dakota Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) sponsored by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction and Department of Health. The YRBS survey will ask about nutrition, physical activity, injuries, tobacco, alcohol, other drug use, sexual behavior and school climate. The content of the YTS survey includes tobacco questions related to: prevalence (electronic vapor products, cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, cigars, and pipes); knowledge and attitudes; cessation; environmental tobacco smoke; media and advertising; minors' access; and school curriculum.
Students in grades 9-12 will be asked to fill out a questionnaire that takes about 45 minutes to complete. Doing this survey will cause no risk to students. The survey has been designed to protect student privacy. No student or class will ever be mentioned by name in a report of the results. The results of the survey will help establish trends over time that can be utilized in school planning and curriculum development.
We would like all selected students to take part in the survey, but the survey is voluntary. No action will be taken against the school, you, or your child, if your child does not take part. Students can skip any question they do not wish to answer. In addition, students may stop participating in the survey at any point without penalty.
The surveys will be available in the front office for you to preview if you desire. If you decide you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please download the form linked here and return it to the office by March 22.

What does success look like?
As part of the activity, students had the opportunity to share examples of people who show what it looks like to be successful. Of the 157 responses, over 75% referred to family members. The other examples referred to teachers, coaches, friends, and celebrities.
The presentation, linked below shows some examples of how students in grades 7-12 identified and described success for now and in the future.
