Attendance Matters!
Regarding student attendance:
Dear Mill Creek Community,
I hope this message finds you well! We wanted to reach out with an important message about attendance.
Our students need to be in school consistently - that is where the real learning happens! Showing up on time and attending school regularly is so important to our students' success and future. Chronic tardiness and absenteeism severely impacts a child's growth and ability to learn.
Let's come together as a community to ensure our students are making their education a top priority. Attending school regularly and on time needs to be an expectation and a habit. Our teachers work hard to create engaging lessons and our students deserve to benefit from them.
Every school day counts in a child's education. Every lesson matters. Every interaction with a teacher or another student has value. Our students' futures depend on the education they receive now.
Some sobering statistics:
• Students who are chronically absent in middle school are 7 times more likely to drop out of high school.
• By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will not graduate from high school.
• By being present, students are 15-20% more likely to graduate high school and 30% more likely to enroll in post-secondary education.
We urge all of us - students, parents, admin, teachers and staff - to make attendance a priority. Our students are worth it. Their futures are worth it. Let's set them up for success by getting them to school, on time, each and every day. Thank you to those who have students that have been attending school consistently, even though life, as we all know, can get in the way of our best intensions at times.
We are a team in this together! Let's make this happen.
Thank you for your time and support. Our students are fortunate to have a community that cares about their wellbeing and education.

Solar Eclipse Safety
CCPS Community,
A partial solar eclipse will take place on Monday, April 8, 2024. In Calvert County, the eclipse will begin at approximately 2:00 p.m. and end just after 4:30 p.m., with maximum coverage at 3:20 p.m. During the eclipse, there will be 86 - 88% coverage during which it will get darker outside, but there will not be total darkness.
All CCPS schools dismiss at some point during the eclipse period. Parents/guardians and students should be aware of the following safety tips:
- Never look directly at the sun, especially during a solar eclipse. It is dangerous to look directly at the sun and can cause permanent damage to the eyes. Do not look at the sun through sunglasses, a telescope, or binoculars.
- Anyone using special viewing glasses or filters should only use those that conform to all International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards.
- If you purchase special viewing glasses, ensure they are from reputable manufacturers. There have been reports of counterfeit products labeled as if they conform to international safety standards. The American Astronomical Society, whose products are known to conform to ISO standards, provides a list of companies that are reputable and conform to safety standards.
Resources for elementary students to safely view the eclipse have been shared with schools as they will be at school during maximum coverage.
Students and families are encouraged to read more about solar eclipses and safety and enjoy experiencing this exciting phenomenon.
