Interim Superintendent's Update
School Leaders of the Diocese of Cleveland,
Welcome back from Thanksgiving. And please join me in extending our warmest welcome to our new colleague, Marty Dybicz, who has stepped up to lead St. Rocco school following the departure of Matt Daniels to Toledo. More on Marty is below.
I hope we all had the chance to refresh and recenter on gratitude last weekend before Advent begins this coming Sunday. It feels like the activities really start moving quickly this time of year. Before the hustle and bustle, we here at the OCFE are going to take a little time for long-term planning.
Thursday and Friday of this week, the OCFE School Leadership Team along with OCFE colleagues in finance and technology will be gathered in Columbus with leaders of the 5 other Catholic dioceses in Ohio. We will be focused on how we, as system level leaders, can support you, our school leaders, in bringing about and sustaining excellence in Catholic culture and academic formation. Our guest presenter will be Dr. Christian Dallavis, Senior Director of Leadership Programs for the University of Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education.
We will return and early next week our team will gather to look forward to next year’s calendar. One of our first priorities will be to update the calendar template so that you have it on hand as you are planning and communicating about your upcoming school years. Look for that in early December.
With December almost upon us, don’t forget to keep on top of your winter to-do list, including the emergency management test, due by December 31 where applicable, as well as applications for those seeking to become a Jon Peterson Scholarship and/or Autism Scholarship Provider, for which the provider application window opens December 1, as well as applying for or renewing other school choice programs (Cleveland, EdChoice, EdChoice Expansion).
Finally, the registration is also open for the 2019 NCEA Convention to be held in Chicago April 23-25. There’s still time for early bird registration available at
https://www.ncea.org/NCEA2019. The convention promises to be full of valuable professional opportunities for connection and collaboration. I hope that many of us will be able to attend.
Yours in Christ,
Frank

Researched Based Intervention Resources: #5 - ReadWriteThink
The free website ReadWriteThink (www.readwritethink.org) provides high quality and engaging materials to teach students reading and writing skills in grades K-12. Detailed lessons include the research that supports its practice, the addressed curriculum standards, and related resources to adjust or extend the plan. Its video library contains short videos of teachers modeling and explaining the featured instructional practices. To find a particular lesson topic or learning objective, click on the ‘Search Resources’ tool to quickly narrow down and identify just the right plan for your students’ learning needs. The ‘Strategy Guides’ feature offers skill building strategies that can be taught to students and applied across various learning situations. Teaching writing, inquiry-based learning, and reading in the content areas are a few of the key topics addressed in these mini teacher tutorials.
Friday, November 30 is the last day to claim School Safety Training Grants
Just a reminder that the extended deadline for the School Safety Training Grants ends November 30. Attorney General DeWine mailed a letter to each school this fall with instructions on how to access the funds for use between October 1, 2018, and June 30, 2019. A full list of grant awards can be found on the Ohio Attorney General's website. If you are not on the list and wish to be, find your letter or contact 614-466-6963, or email SchoolSafetyGrants@OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov for assistance.
