Week of April 29
Down by 4
2 Outs
Loaded bases
and Number Two is up to bat.
Cheers from the crowd are roaring. Mom is standing at the fence with her phone in her hand ready to capture the moment, while also shouting out his nickname. Pitcher rears back and lobs it in a straight line... "Sttttrriikee" is bellowed from the umpires sunflower seed filled mouth.
Batter steps out of the box, swivels around to get a fleeting look of the third base coach who is busy making all sorts of hand symbols, and then steps back up to the plate. Pitcher nods, grips the baseball, and slams another one right into the catcher's glove...."Stttrrikkkeee twwoooo" echoes across the field. Number two lowers his head, steps out, and this time doesn't look back at his coach. "YOU CAN DO IT," his mom wails, "Hang in there, bud!"
Three more pitches make their way across the plate, it is now a full count. You can see the sweat beading on the pitchers forehead. The batter hasn't looked back in three pitches. He steps up to the plate, the pitcher winds back, the batter swivels his back foot and stretches his arms across his body. "Stttrikke three-batters out of here" rings in our ears, and that is the ballgame.
Slumped bodies jog across the field and line up to congratulate the other team on their win, but as they pass each other, I can't help but notice some of the players from the other team stopping to talk to the boys and smiles appear on the losing teams face. Even with a loss, the kids become upbeat because their hard work and efforts were recognized.
In all aspects of our life, being recognized makes us feel appreciated, valued, and drives us to want to do more. April is coming to an end, and in the next month we will begin receiving test results from our bigs, making plans for next years school year, and wrapping up an amazing 18/19 term. For some, the news might not be as expected, but I believe it is important to recognize something in all of us; No matter the outcome, progress has been made, and hard work has not gone unnoticed.
Recognizing student and even staff/teachers accomplishments can benefit not only learning, but also the overall school climate. The reinforcement of finding something worth recognizing can help cultivate pride, bolster constructive behavior, and help everyone see each other in a positive light! I often find myself saying to my own children, "I'm not looking for perfection or super achievement, but progress."
As we continue on our journey to the end of this school year, I hope you continue to recognize greatness and progress in each other. We all seem to thrive even more when other's notice how well we are doing. Reflecting these strengths back to the children, not just at the end of the year but all along the way, will continue to help them stretch towards the next challenges in life!
Shout out to all of Alkek staff- You are being recognized, we can see your progress, continue shining!
**On a slightly different note- Are you an Astros fan?! Click here to see their schedule and standings! Hard work is definitely recognized when watching them play, you won't be disappointed!

The Power of Appreciation

Lots of wonderful things in store for us this month!
Fun Facts about May:
Some Native American Tribes called the May full moon the Full Flower Moon, The Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon. The Anglo- Saxon word for May was Tri-Milchi meaning 3 milks because the grass had become so lush and green that you could milk the cows three times a day!
According to the Goddess, May is a blessed month! Not a single U.S. President has ever died in the month of May. However, two presidents were born in May including Harry S. Truman and John F. Kennedy! According to the Zodiac, people born in May are more likely to achieve higher success and more love in their life!
How interesting!

A little about Mrs. Coloney:
She married her husband-Andrew on March 10, 2001! (Happy Belated Anniversary to the two love birds! )
They have 2 Beautiful Daughters- Jayden-13 and Gabrielle-8
and 2 Handsome Sons- Isaiah-10 and Elijah-5!
She is a Scorpio born on November 7th!
Fun fact about Scorpios- They have mystical and profound spirits, insatiably curious minds, and deep reservoirs of power which they keep hidden under the surface of their magnetic personalities! -So True, Mrs. Coloney has such an amazing personality!
Her favorite hobby outside of school and teaching are: Singing, Exercising, and drawing
Mrs. Coloney's favorite book or shall I say books is the Harry Potter series!
Shikisha says she likes to watch - The King of Queens on T.V.!
When asked if she is an animal lover, Kisha replies with: "Not really an animal lover, maybe more of animal tolerance, for my kids sake. My children have 2 hamsters, 3 crabs and a lot of fish."
Her favorite holiday is Thanksgiving! She says, "It is a day to give thanks, be around family, eat good food and go shopping!" I agree, it is such a wonderful holiday!
Kisha's favorite quote or words she tends to live by are:
"I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me."
When asked if she had a hero, Kisha says, "My grandmother was and still is my hero. She was a hard worker that loved God, an encourager and a person to tell you the truth whether you liked it or not."
Shikisha says she is most proud of her family!
I asked Mrs. Coloney to tell us a little about how she ended up where she is now and she said, "I was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. I served in the Oklahoma Army National Guard for 12 and 1/2 years. I received the bronze star while serving in Afghanistan: Operation Freedom. I often enjoy going for a nice long run on the weekends. I tend to be a little competitive!"
We love having Mrs. Coloney and her beautiful family with us at Alkek!
Thanks for all you do, Shikisha, we appreciate you so much!
Enjoy your spotlight!
