OUR STORY - Shout Outs!
WCS Weekly Highlights - Sept. 16-20, 2019
2018-2019 Accountability Highlights
Wilson County Schools now ranks 58th in the state for overall proficiency out of 115 school districts - up one ranking from last year! In 2015-16, our rank was 90th; in 2016-17, our rank was 89th; and in 2017-18, it leapt to 59th. For the past three school years, we've had the highest increase in proficiency OF ANY DISTRICT IN THE STATE!!!! We are only seven percentage points away from being one of the top 20 highest performing school systems in North Carolina. It’s important to note that the state implemented a new math End-of-Grade (EOG) test, which means no retest was available for students who didn’t met proficiency. Traditionally, retest scores boost our results by 5%. The state only used the first administration of the math EOG test for the 2018-19 calculations. But even without the higher retest scores, we still had amazing results! Superintendent Dr. Lane Mills shared a complete snapshot of our 2018-19 results at the Sept. 16 Board of Education meeting. Honored Educator
Shout Out! to Fike HS IB Coordinator Rhonda Meszaros for being selected as the 2019-2020 John F. and Emy Swindell Hinnant Honored Educator Scholar through the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT). The scholarship enables her to attend a week of professional development at one of the NCCAT campuses. The scholarship is made possible by Emy and John Hinnant, who are both retired WCS teachers. Ms. Meszaros is planning to attend the session "Developing Teacher Leaders In & Out of the Classroom" at the Ocracoke NCCAT campus in January. She is an incredible teacher, and we know this session is going to enhance her already stellar leadership skills! The Board of Education recognized Ms. Meszaros at the Sept. 16 Board meeting.

Health Careers
Through the Career Connections Program, selected high school students are spending eight weeks job shadowing health care professionals at Carolina Family Health Centers and Wilson Medical Center. They just had their orientation at Carolina Health Centers this week. The students have an interest in the medical field, and we are so excited for them! This program is made possible by the Wilson Education Partnership, WCS, Area L AHEC, Wilson Medical Center and Carolina Family Health Centers.
