English and Reading - Mrs. DeGeare
In eighth grade English this week, we started talking about pronoun usage! This weeks focus has been proper usage of personal pronouns, including subject-pronoun agreement. In Reading, the students have been working very hard to complete their Macbeth essay! They completed a rough draft on Wednesday, which was then peer reviewed by another partner in the class. The students then used their peer feedback to adjust and make improvements to their essay. Everyone has done a wonderful job!
7th Grade
In seventh grade English this week, we continued our unit on mechanics. The focus of this week was proper comma usage. Students took notes on comma rules, and we practiced by correcting errors in sentences. In reading, everyone took a quiz over act one of Romeo and Juliet on Wednesday. We will begin reading at two tomorrow, and will continue after spring break!
6th Grade
Sixth grade has been very busy this week! In English, we have continued our unit on sentence, mechanics by learning about proper capitalization and punctuation. Everyone seems to be doing a very good job so far! In Reading, everyone has been working very hard on their project for “The Hobbit!” The students were given a choice between two different options for how they would showcase their understanding of Middle Earth and significant characters and places. I am so impressed with their hard work so far! They were given lots of time in class this week to work on their projects, and everyone is getting very close to being finished. Their projects are due the Monday we return from break, though many of them will likely be finished before then. They also have an upcoming unit test over “The Hobbit”. The test will be given on Wednesday, April 5. The students received a study guide for the test on Monday of this week. They know that they should be reviewing the vocabulary, quotes, and questions so that they are prepared!
History and Religion - Mr. Saavedra
8th Grade History and Religion
In 8th grade history, we have looked at the significance of the Louisiana Purchase and the idea of Western Expansion. We have debated the role of the federal government and how much power it should have? In religion, we have worked in groups to discuss what a community looks like and how to build one. We have read about the life of St. Benedict and how he believed that to find God we must be in community with each other.
7th Grade History and Religion
In 7th grade history, we have debated the role of church and state. We have looked at specific events from the Middle Ages through Socratic seminars on the authority of rulers versus the authority of a religious figure. In religion, students have done scripture research. Students have written down the qualities they look for in someone they admire and then have looked through scripture to make connections to figures from the Old Testament who have lived out those qualities.
6th Grade History and Religion
In 6th grade history, we have concluded our look at the Persian Wars. In class students used their imagination to create the scenes of Thermopylae and hypothesize what they thought would happen next. In religion, we looked at the Catechism of the Catholic Church to make connections to the fall of man and original sin.
