Park Place Post

From the Principal...
I want to first thank you for the warm welcome I've received from the Park Meadows community as the new principal. I can't express how much I've felt supported by staff, parents, and students in these first couple of months. I am grateful to be part of a community that works together to create a successful educational environment for all.
This is our first newsletter of the year. I decided to use Smore because it allows us to attach links, photos, videos, and files. We will start by sending a school newsletter every two weeks. If we find the need to send them weekly, we will adjust. Teachers are all going to send weekly newsletters this year, and I will attach those to the bottom of the school newsletter so you can see what is happening across campus. I would love to hear from you to know what you like about the newsletters and what you would like more or less of!
Again, thank you for welcoming me to Park Meadows! I appreciate the opportunity to serve this school community and work together to build everyone up to reach our highest potential.
Respectfully,
Kim Lanese
Parent Liaison Updates
Meet Mrs.Fraemohs!
Cassandra Fraemohs is the new parent liaison here at Park Meadows. Your child may know her as the playground monitor. Mrs. Fraemohs is also a Park Parent with four students here at our school! We are looking forward to having Cassandra here to help get more involved with you and your children. Park Meadows will also be more involved with the community working with St. Mary's Food Bank, collaborating with the teachers and staff on campus to better serve our parents and students. We are looking forward to this new adventure! If you have any questions or would like to help out, please email her at cassandra.fraemohs@dvusd.org

PBIS Focus
What is PBIS?
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention Systems and is a school-wide system of supports that includes proactive strategies for defining, teaching and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments. We focus on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom) and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all children by making problem behavior less effective, efficient & relevant, and desired behavior more functional.
The four core expectations for Park Meadows are: Prepared, Accountable, Respectful, and Kind. (PARK). Under each of these criteria are specific expectations for different areas of campus, as outlined on our school-wide PBIS matrix. We tie our Park Tickets in to reinforce the PARK behaviors. PARK Tickets are not rewards, but rather tokens of acknowledgment for demonstrating expected behavior. Students can earn PARK tickets by modeling the positive behaviors, and they can use the tickets to buy fun items at our Park Place store. Please ask your child how they earn PARK tickets and use positive behavior at Park Meadows.
Life in the Lunchroom
DID YOU KNOW? Meals continue to be free for all students for the 2021-2022 school year! Students can eat both breakfast and lunch meals at the school regardless of your household’s income. Funding for this benefit is provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This is a great time for your child to try school meals.
Menus have gone digital. Download the MY SCHOOL MENUS APP for your cell phone or to view from your desktop visit www.dvusd.org/nutrition or the menu button on the school website. If you would like to have a printed menu, you can print from any desktop computer.
Although meals are free this year, families are encouraged to still submit a meal application because certification may be used for other programs, such as P-EBT, funding for our school, discounted rates for internet service, and more. Students who are eligible for benefits will be eligible for the first 30 days of school next year when we anticipate meals will no longer be free of charge. Applications can be filled out at www.EZMealApp.com or www.dvusd.org/mealassistance.
Birthday Treats
Hello Families, The motto this week in school is:
I don't trade what I want most for what I want now.
This week the focus is on the ability to delay gratification. James Clear wrote a helpful article about Delayed Gratification. This link will take you to the article. The headline reads:
40 Years of Stanford Research Found That People With This One Quality, Are More Likely to Succeed.
What is that one quality? The ability to delay gratification. Being able to put off immediate gratification for something more important later is a crucial component to success. The best news about teaching your child how to delay gratification is that it can be learned. Just as we can increase our strength at the gym, we can improve our ability to delay gratification.
You can help your child understand the concept of delayed gratification by asking, "Would this make your future self happy?" When they think about that question, it may help them connect to what is important to them down the road, so they are willing to work for it now. Keeping what you want in mind is the first step to attaining it. When you see your child making short-term decisions, help them connect to what they want more, rather than what they want now. It can also help to share with them how, when you take action and get your work done, you often feel better because contributing to your future success usually feels better than avoiding your current obligations. Here are some picture books that can help explain this better for younger children:
• The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss
• Someday by Eileen Spinelli
• Joe the Monkey Saves for a Goal by John Lanza & Marylin Walton
Wishing you a wonderful week,
Danna Evans
