News From John Tuck Elementary (Febrero 2020)
Principal's Message
Dear John Tuck Community,
The school year continues to zoom by us at an almost unbelievable pace. Our students have begun their Artist in Residence experience with local artist, Nancy Mitchell. They will complete several different projects while learning about some of the major artists in history and replicating their style of art . We have also been completing our mid-year reading and math assessments in an effort to measure growth in both areas and readjust each students individual plan for growth through the second half of the year. As we transition into the second half of our school year we are working hard to help students develop healthy habits and strong character. We often emphasize with students the need for their brains and bodies to receive 9-11 hours of sleep per night in order to grow to their full potential. Eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water and limiting their screen time are other ways we can help our children/students stay healthy and maximize their learning growth. Here is a great reminder about the amount necessary, and importance of, sleep for our children from a research report put out by the National Sleep Foundation:
“The National Sleep Foundation (NSF), along with a multi-disciplinary expert panel, issued its new recommendations for appropriate sleep durations. The report recommends wider appropriate sleep ranges for most age groups. The results are published in Sleep Health: The Journal of the National Sleep Foundation . The National Sleep Foundation convened experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology to reach a consensus from the broadest range of scientific disciplines. The panel revised the recommended sleep ranges for all six children and teen age groups. A summary of the new recommendations includes:
Newborns (0-3 months): Sleep range narrowed to 14-17 hours each day (previously it was 12-18)
Infants (4-11 months): Sleep range widened two hours to 12-15 hours (previously it was 14-15)
Toddlers (1-2 years): Sleep range widened by one hour to 11-14 hours (previously it was 12-14)
Preschoolers (3-5): Sleep range widened by one hour to 10-13 hours (previously it was 11-13)
School age children (6-13): Sleep range widened by one hour to 9-11 hours (previously it was 10-11)
Teenagers (14-17): Sleep range widened by one hour to 8-10 hours (previously it was 8.5-9.5)”
Thanks for all you do to support your child and the John Tuck school community. I look forward to connecting with you at the many fun events we have scheduled for this spring!
Make it a great month!

Happy New Year From Nurse Kristine!
This is just a little reminder that we are heading into the peak of cold, flu, and tummy bug season. Prevention is key during this inevitable time of year so here are a few reminders from the school district guidelines:
Illness Prevention
- Practice frequent and effective hand washing.
- Students should get at least 8-10 hours a sleep per night.
- Dress for cold weather: long pants, jackets, snow or rain boots.
- Get a flu shot….it’s not too late!
- Reinforce the "elbow cough" sometimes called the "vampire cough" or "dab" (it's when you cough into your elbow and not your hand. THis method is very helpful in preventing germ spread.)
- Students need to stay home if they have a fever over 100 F, vomiting, diarrhea or profuse nasal drainage. For detailed school illness criteria, please go to RSD website and click on the “Student Health” tab under “Departments”.
