Hawk Highlights
April 17, 2024
Hello, Highlands Families!
๐ Spring is in full swing! We have finished our state assessments for grades 3-6 and will celebrate this accomplishment on Friday afternoon with popsicles on the playground for these grades (thank you, PTA!).
๐ We had a blast welcoming our newest Hawks at Pre-K and Kindergarten Round-Up last week. If you have an incoming Kindergartner or know of a neighbor that does, please ensure your child is enrolled for Kindergarten as soon as possible if he/she is not already! This greatly helps finalize our staffing. Thank you!
๐ฒ Bike-rider season is officially here! Please provide a refresher with your bike rider on safety expectations: student need to walk his/her bike until off of the school campus. This includes walking the bike through the playground and on the back path around the green space to the back gate. Thank you!
๐ 4/19 Volunteers Needed! We are in need of parent volunteers to help assist in the coordination of Picnic on the Playground this Friday, 4/19 from 11-12:00 or 12:00-12:45. Please sign up HERE if you are able to help!

- ๐ฅช Lunch will not be offered to guests from the cafeteria โ VIP guests will need to bring their own lunch.
- ๐๏ธ VIP guests will enter through playground gate and will need to show the above virtual ticket. **Please forward this email to any VIP guests that will be attending.
- ๐ The Scholastic Book Fair will be open during this lunchtime and VIP guests are welcome to bring their student to the Library after lunch to browse the Book Fair. The Book Fair entry will be through the side exterior Library door.
๐ READY, SET, READ! It's time for the Highlands Spring Book Fair!
๐ April 16-19
๐ณ Need to set up an e-wallet? This is the easiest way for your students to manage their money. Money that is not spent by the end of the fair remains on their account and can be used for future Scholastic purchases. Here is the link:

๐ฑ โจ Highlands Wildly Important Goals (WIGs)
HI WIG #1: Implement a system-wide monitoring process that utilizes collaborative instructional teams who meet regularly to review student data from screening, progress monitoring, and common formative assessments (CFAs) to identify next steps for instruction. (Intentional Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 instruction)
- โ Lead Measures (to get us there):
- Intentional Core Instruction: Students are doing the talking (thinking); teachers are asking questions to encourage students to think and generalize what they know to new situations.
- Intentional Core Instruction: Teacher teams will use information from CFAs and real-time observations during core instruction to strategically target skills that will accelerate achievement
- Educational Equity: How will we get EVERY student there? A collective responsibility to provide students with what they need, when they need it, and with an urgency to master essential outcomes.
- IXL: students will engage in personalized learning plans using the IXL app to master skills for each priority standard with an 80% proficiency in both ELA and Math.
HI WIG #2: Prioritize social/emotional personalized learning through explicit instruction, modeling, classroom norms, school rituals/routines, and caring attention.
- โ Lead Measures (to get us there):
- Student absenteeism: monitor student absenteeism and create a plan to help students be at school consistently. Students that miss 10% of school days are defined as chronically absent.
- Mindful Mornings: Each morning from 8:00-8:30 will be a time for face-to-face (device-free) connection and friendship. Students know they can softly enter their school day.
- Schoolwide system of mentorship: all-school mindful mornings each month, Hawks Nests each month, classroom buddies, and 6th grade jobs.
- Positive behavior system: of grace and accountability through our PBIS and BIST programs.
