Next week is International Languages Week. This week provides an opportunity to showcase, learn, and promote our school's diverse languages and cultures. Students at HVHS have exposure to a vast number of international languages. Our students share some of those languages with you here:
Last night we held our Academic Excellence Awards Evening. This was a special night to celebrate the achievement of our top academics- those who gained an excellence endorsement in NCEA last year. Excellence level means that these students are performing at a level of critical thinking where they are making links, predicting, challenging and showing an understanding of complicated concepts - the world needs thinkers and problem solvers of this level.
Excellence isn’t a skill - it’s an attitude, and this level of success does not come about easily - it comes about with a lot of hard mahi, late nights, and sacrifices of social and family time. Many of these students are successful across academic, cultural, sporting and social fields and exemplify our core value of achievement.
Congratulations on your outstanding success. It is going to be exciting following your progress.
Whāia te mātauranga hei oranga mō koutou
If you follow the path of learning, the world will be your oyster.

Gifted and Talented News
We would like to encourage students to enter the Paul Seideman Scholarship which is an annual composition contest to encourage Aotearoa New Zealand residents to learn more about the Holocaust. This year's topic is, "Though if be to die, we will fight...We will fight, not for ourselves, but for future generations." - Yitzhak Katsenelson, Warsaw Ghetto Fighter. Students are encouraged to examine the way in which the memory of the ghetto uprising can be shown through poetry, art, music, dramatisation or personal memoirs. Your entry should show how you honour their humanity and their memories, and how it will continue to shape future generations.
Please come and see Ms Feerick up in the Deans' Centre for more information.
