MST Weekly Update
April 5, 2024
Good afternoon to all of our MST family members.
I know that the calendar says April, but the view out of my office window says January. This storm was a nasty April Fool's joke. Yesterday was our 3rd snow ay of the year and is the last "free" day that was built into the calendar. We should not need any more, hopefully, but if there is another snow day, it will be a remote learning day as long as there aren't widespread power and internet outages.
Monday is the Great North American Solar Eclipse. The next time that a total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States is 2044, and in NH it will be in 2079. In Manchester, the moon will cover about 95% of the sun at approximately 3:30 PM. That means that 5% of the sun's light will remain visible so it will not be total darkness here like it will be in northern NH. Please remind your children, that it is not safe to look at the partial eclipse at all unless they are wearing protective eclipse viewing glasses. We will have some available here on Monday if students want them.
Monday will be the start of the 4th quarter. At this point the end of the year rapidly approaches, so it is so important for all students to be caught up with all of their work. Remember that each high school subject and CTE program has a designated after school help day. This information can be found on the school calendar on our MST Website.
FBLA Gold
The Future Business Leaders of America held the 52nd annual state conference/competition this past week in downtown Manchester. Nine of the 453 students in attendance represented MST. In all, 24 schools from all corners of state came together for 2 full days to network, attend workshops and compete in a variety of business related competitions. The maturity and professionalism demonstrated by our student delegation, shined brightly. Congratulations to contender Max Philbert for bringing home the 1st place medal in Human Resource Management. We are proud of each and every one of you!
Scholarship Opportunities
We have over $15,000 in scholarship money to be awarded to our MSTHS students. Students need to fill out our MSTHS application to apply for these scholarships. The application can be picked up in the Student Support Center and must be returned to Ms. Stephen or Ms. Weiss by April 18th. The application is attached below. Do not worry if you have not yet received your FAFSA information as many students have not at this time.
Also, for members of the National Technical Honor Society, there are serval scholarship opportunities can be found at https://nths.org/scholarships-2/. NTHS is dedicated to providing scholarships to career and technical education students who choose a skilled trade as their career. Each year, NTHS awards over a quarter of a million dollars through these exclusive scholarship opportunities.
We continue to receive scholarships daily. Please remind students to check out the Xello Scholarship page, and our scholarship folder in SSC.
Solar Eclipse/Car Show
Our National Technical Honor Society is sponsoring an Eclipse Motor Meet on Monday April 8th from 2:30-4:00. The group is reserving 20 parking spaces for MST students and staff to show off their car or motorcycle. During the event, there will be a nearly total (95%) eclipse of the sun at 3:40 PM.
The cost of entry is $5.00. Anyone in attendance will be required to have Solar Eclipse viewing glasses in order to safely view the eclipse. You may bring your own, or they can be purchased in the Griifin's Den school store for $2.00 beginning on 4/4.
Fingers crossed for a sunny day!
Get the Facts About Lead Poising in Manchester
Did you know that on average 100 children in Manchester test positive for lead poisoning? Most exposure to lead comes from lead paint that was used in houses years ago but is still present under layers of newer paint. Lead poisoning can lead to learning and speech delays, hearing loss, delayed growth, lower IQs and more.
If you would like to know more about the dangers of lead poisoning, you are invited to attend a presentation by the Manchester Health Department. The presentations will be on Tuesday April 9th at Beech Elementary School or Tuesday May 7th at Parkside Middle School. Both are at 5:30 PM.
Complete information is attached below.
Prom Information
As we are about to enter the 4th quarter of the school year, you will notice that several end of year activities such as CTE Recognition Night, Class Night and prom have been added to the calendar below.
This year's prom is at The Farmhouse at Candia Woods on Friday May 10th from 6:30 to 10:00 PM. Announcements will be made when tickets go on sale in late April. May 10th will be a regular school day for everyone, and students must be present in school (and in all of their classes) for more than half of the school day (3-1/2 hours) or they will not be able to attend the prom. There are NO exceptions to this, so please schedule any appointments accordingly. Students who arrive on time for school must be in school until at least 11:20. If they arrive late to school, they must be in school for 3-1/2 hours before they can be dismissed. No students will be dismissed without a note signed by a parent or guardian. There will be a meeting with all students attending the prom during Advisory that day.
