FCPS Virtual Martin Luther King Jr Celebration
A special FCPS virtual celebration will be presented Friday, January 15 honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on what would have been his 92nd birthday.
The theme for the 31st annual FCPS celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King is Only in the Darkness Can You See the Stars: Courage to Be the Light.
During the presentation, which will air on both FCPS Cable Channel 18 and the FCPS Maryland YouTube channel, students will be recognized with King Awards, presented to one outstanding student from each of the county's public schools. It will premiere on FCPS Cable Channel 18 at 7 p.m. Friday, January 15.
To earn the award, the student must have demonstrated positive leadership qualities characteristic of Dr. King and exhibited traits of responsibility, caring, fairness, trustworthiness, citizenship and respect - the six pillars of Character Counts!
Congratulations to Anna Beth in Grade 5 who will be representing MYES!
Delay in Hybrid Model
Due to worsening trends in health metrics, Frederick County Public Schools is delaying its plan to implement a hybrid learning model.
In its updated plan, teachers will return to buildings on Wednesday, January 27, with students returning as part of an in-person hybrid model on Tuesday, February 16, with Wednesday, February 3, and Wednesday February 10, serving as asynchronous learning days. If FCPS does not see positive trends in data by later this month, the implementation of the hybrid model will be delayed again with teachers returning Wednesday, February 10, and students returning Monday, March 1. In this scenario, Wednesday, February 17, and Wednesday, February 24, will be asynchronous learning days.
FCPS will also continue to monitor health metrics daily and consult with the Frederick County Health Department. This feedback will guide future decisions. FCPS encourages everyone in the community to follow all Frederick County Health Department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
Inclement Weather
In the event of inclement weather, students will continue to engage in virtual instruction using the schedule that is currently in effect -- the schedule for all virtual or the schedule for the hybrid model.
An announcement cancelling small group instruction will be made by 5 a.m. on inclement weather days, and those students will also participate in virtual learning for the day.
If the weather event is significant enough to warrant closing FCPS offices, then an announcement will be made that the entire system is closed and NO virtual instruction will occur. This will be considered a "snow day" and the day will be made up as outlined in the FCPS Calendar Handbook.
For more information, please refer to FCPS Regulation 400-02: Closing of School due to Weather, Maintenance or Other Reasons.
Coronavirus Dashboard
FCPS has added a link on the school system's web homepage to the Maryland Department of Health's Coronavirus Dashboard. The dashboard features a Schools Data tab that serves as a resource for anyone who wants information about COVID outbreaks in school buildings.
Schools are listed as having an outbreak when the following occur:
*At least two confirmed COVID-19 cases among students/teachers/staff within a 14-day period, epidemiologically linked outside of household contacts; or
*Three or more classrooms or cohorts with cases from separate households that meet the classroom/cohort outbreak definition, occurring within 14 days; or
*Five percent or more unrelated students/teachers/staff with confirmed COVID-19 within a 14-day period (minimum of 10 unrelated students/teachers/staff).
FCPS also continues to link to the dashboard at www.fcps.org/update.
