PTA NEWS FLASH
Indian Knoll Elementary
Letter from the Principal
IKES Families,
Fall is in the air and we have many exciting activities on the horizon. Our PTA is fully
committed to a strong partnership with IKES and works collaboratively with the school staff
to accomplish goals that positively impact our students. Please support them with your
participation in spirit nights, school events, and fundraisers. We are also very excited to
celebrate our Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Darlene Palmisiano! She will be representing our school in
the Sequoyah High School homecoming parade on October 23rd, so please come out and cheer
her on.
Our students have embraced their new Bird Houses this year and are working collaboratively
to make good choices and earn DoJo points for themselves and their house. Our first Bird
House Meeting will take place on Friday, October 18, 2019! We will name our PRIDE OF THE
FLOCK (1 student per class), PRIDE OF THE NEST (1 student per house), and PRIDE OF THE
KNOLL (1 student per school). The students will also be recognized for perfect attendance at
this time. The winning house will get a one-hour carnival themed party in the afternoon.
Our 2019-20 School Improvement Plan is completed, and our academic goals are to
improve both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math scores. We have many school incentives
for both goals and are laser focused on raising student achievement in a warm and nurturing
environment. The research shows that reading is the one skill that positively impacts overall
student achievement in all areas of the curriculum. You can partner with your child’s teacher
by encouraging pleasure reading. This will build comprehension skills, increase student
vocabulary and provide a solid foundation for written expression.
We appreciate your partnership and look forward to a very successful school year.

Spotlight on Kindness! Meet Carter Counts!
Goodness is about character - integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, moral courage, and the like. More than anything else, it is about how we treat other people. ~ Dennis Prager
They say that, "honesty is the best policy." No one displayed this better more recently than IKES second grader, Carter Counts. With the excitement surrounding our "Arctic Adventure" book fair, $5 was misplaced. Carter came upon the lost money, and promptly turned it in. Not only was Carter's concern with the money being lost, but that a student may miss out on buying a special book from the book fair because they had misplaced it. These sort of selfless acts are what make our Firebirds so amazing! Thank you, Carter for having concern for a fellow student and having a heart that does the right thing. You display the kindness that this world needs!
Help us spread some love by sharing wonderful acts of kindness that you do or experience! Let's celebrate compassion together and inspire each other to pay it forward! Please send pictures or stories of your acts of kindness to nchambley.ikespta@gmail.com.

visible stand against drugs. Show your personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol of the Red Ribbon. Make it social. #redribbonweek
This week, we will have fun themes to celebrate this movement. See below for each day's theme. We hope that everyone has fun participating!

DEADLINE TO SIGN UP: ALL Audition Sign-Up Forms, Music, and Lyrics are due by Friday October 18th.
AUDITIONS: Thursday, October 24th at IKES Cafeteria (starting at 4pm)
DRESS REHEARSAL: Tuesday, November 12th at 5pm at Sequoyah High School Theater
TALENT SHOW: Saturday, November 16th at 6pm at SHS Theater (Cast & Crew arrives at 5:30pm)
Please review these dates and the guidelines on the Audition Signup Form before signing up to tryout for the Talent Show. Attendance is mandatory at auditions, dress rehearsal and show for Performers and Emcees. NOTE: Backstage Crew Members do not need to attend auditions but must still complete this Signup Form to participate and must commit to attending the dress rehearsal and show.
A few key things to remember about auditions:
~ All varieties of acts are encouraged to audition - any (elementary age appropriate) skill that can be shown to an audience is welcome at auditions.
~ A panel of judges made up of IKES Teachers, Principal, and Assistant Principals will observe auditions and determine which acts will be selected for the show.
~ Due to the time limitations and logistics, there will be NO MAKEUP AUDITIONS for any reason.
~ Students will be asked to perform up to 45 seconds of their act. Acts should be less than 3 minutes in length due to time limitations of the show.
~ Acts will be selected based upon level of polish and preparation at time of audition as well as whether the material is appropriate for elementary age audiences (lyrics, content, costumes, etc).
Parents/Guardians are expected to stay and supervise their children during Auditions (IKES) and Dress Rehearsal (SHS). *If Parent/Guardian cannot accompany their child to Auditions, the student may be enrolled in ASP for the day of Auditions (October 24th) for a fee of $10. To enroll, email Jennifer Severson: Jennifer.Severson@cherokeek12.net.
