What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord.
What Causes MS?
The cause of MS is currently unknown, but is generally believed to be an autoimmune disease. Some scientists think that it's triggered by an infection which activates T cells (white blood cells). The T cells begin a process that crosses the blood-brain barrier and starts attacking the central nervous system.
Can MS Be Prevented?
Multiple sclerosis cannot be prevented, but researchers believe that a combination of genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of multiple sclerosis.
Symptoms and Effects of MS

Treatment for MS
There is no cure for MS. Treatment typically focuses on recovery from attacks and slowing down the progression of the disease. Physical therapy and medications that suppress the immune system can help with symptoms.
