Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School
February 8, 2019
Well it's hard to believe it was 60 degrees yesterday and today there were snowflakes in the air. It's a strong reminder that we are still weeks away from spring, but there is still a lot going on at BWHS. Scheduling for the next school year is in full swing, we piloted our Eagle Time schedule on Tuesday (see information below) and we are now about half-way through the third grading period. Students are working hard in all areas of the building! Please see below for summer opportunities for our students as well as some information for upcoming events.
Our 8th grade orientation and transition night for the Class of 2023 will be THIS Monday, February 11. Please pass this word along to any friends and neighbors of our current 8th graders.
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, school counselor or the administration if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact the main office at 740-965-3766 between the hours of 7:00 and 3:15.

SENIORS: Big Walnut Education Foundation Scholarship Information
The Big Walnut Education Foundation, Inc. estimates that it will be awarding approximately $90,000 in scholarships to Big Walnut students this year. The Education Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization begun in 1994 and controlled by a board of trustees from the Big Walnut community. Through generous donations and fundraising events, the Education Foundation continues to grow and hopefully increase the amount of scholarship awards each year. In 1995, $6,000 was awarded in scholarships; in 2018, $90,000 was awarded to 57 students. Since 1995, The Foundation has awarded scholarships totaling over $1,667,500. A complete list of 2018 scholarship winners is available in the BWHS School Counseling Office.
Applications are now available on Naviance or in the BWHS Counseling Office for all of the Big Walnut Education Foundation College Scholarships. Members of the Class of 2019 may apply for scholarships for college and other accredited post secondary programs. JUNIORS: Buckeye Boys and Girls State 2019
Every summer, the American Legion sponsors Buckeye Boys State and Buckeye Girls State. These week-long events are designed as a mock government simulation for students who are interested in politics, government, current events, etc. Selected students will spend a week on a college campus (at no cost to you) and participate in a simulation to see how government and politics work at a first-hand level.
Any junior who might be interested, or just wants more information should see the links below. Applications can be downloaded from the Sunbury website. The application deadline is February 14 and completed applications can be submitted to the American Legion or given to Mrs. Strahler in the school counseling office.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Sunbury Post of the American Legion.

BW Athletic Summer Opportunities
Updates from the School Counseling Office
Scheduling Information for 2019-2020:
Parents and students should take some time to look at the scheduling request packets that were passed out recently during class meetings. Students are encouraged to talk to their current teachers about choices in particular subject areas and if a student chooses to take an advanced class, they MUST have the "Advanced Course Request" form signed by BOTH a teacher in the subject area and a guardian. All students will have a 1:1 conference with their counselor to schedule.
Current 9th grade students who took a middle school class for high school credit, will also receive an additional document asking families to decide if the student will keep the letter grade (which is what all students have by default) or if they would prefer the letter grade be changed to a "P" for passing. Details are explained on the document but it must be turned in by the end of the student's 9th grade year.
All student requests will be completed by spring break and students will receive their schedules in August.
