VISITING HISTORICAL MUSICIAN
“I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly, music because the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” ----- Plato
We are happy to announce the return of Linda Russell, Historical Musician. In honor of Music In Our Schools Month, we have invited Linda Russell to work with our Marinette students with disabilities (SwD). Linda will be visiting our classes, performing in period costume and inspiring students to absorb music and history! She will introduce students to instruments such as hammered and mountain dulcimers and the limberjack. Her interactive hands-on approach, allowing students to get directly engaged in music and the instruments, leaves many students inspired about music and curious to learn more about American history. Linda will be visiting our schools during the week of April 9th.
SCHOOL SAFETY: ALICE and PREPaRE
Because of its commitment to overall student safety, the district is creating a safety committee. This committee will be overseeing a physical safety component (ALICE) and an emotional safety component (PREPaRE). Three of our school psychologists (Joe Deegan, Carly Drew, and Anne Langlois) are certified PREPaRE trainers. PREPaRE provides all educators training on the roles and responsibilities that relate to the emotional and mental health needs of students and staff. We are fortunate to have members of our Student Services team serve as experts in this important work.

ACADEMIC CAREER PLANNING (ACP)
Our district continues to emphasize Academic Career Planning (ACP) for all 6th - 12th grade students. Developing an Academic Career Plan helps to equip students and their families with the tools necessary to make more informed choices about postsecondary education and training, leading to careers.
ACP is…….
An ongoing process to actively engage students to:
develop an understanding of oneself
create a vision of his/her future
develop individual goals
prepare a personal plan for achieving the vision and goals
A product that documents and reflects students’:
coursework, learning and assessment results
post-secondary plans aligned to career goals & financial reality
record of college and career readiness skills.
If you have any questions about ACP, please contact your child's school counselor.

Mental Health Framework
Recent national tragedies have emphasized the importance of taking care of our mental health.
Good mental health is critical to children’s success in school and life. Research demonstrates that students who receive social–emotional and mental health support perform better academically. School climate, classroom behavior, on-task learning, and students’ sense of connectedness and well-being all improve as well. Left unmet, mental health problems are linked to costly negative outcomes such as academic and behavior problems, dropping out, and delinquency.
During the past school year, the district’s student services team (school psychologists, social workers, counselors, district nurse, and student services quality assurance specialist) has been developing a comprehensive Mental Health Framework of supports, trainings, coaching, instruction, and interventions - all designed to assist our students with staying mentally and emotionally fit. More details about this new initiative will be revealed in the near future.
To ensure that our district goals are met with this framework, we will be establishing a Mental Health Oversight Committee -- made up of parents, district staff, business partners, and community members. This committee will monitor the progress of our mental health initiatives. We are seeking individuals who would be interested in joining this committee. For more information about this, or to sign up for the committee, please contact Tina Pivatto, Student Services Administrative Assistant, at 715-735-1408 or tpivatto@marinette.k12.wi.us.
P,B & J! Picture Books & Jammies Drive: April 9-13, 2018!
We all know the feeling of snuggling in new pajamas with a book to read before bed, right? Let’s share this feeling with little ones that are caught in the transition between homes and help instill the importance of reading in their everyday lives. If you would like to help in this cause, please donate new children’s pajamas (any size) and/or a new or gently used book to any of our libraries.
Help us give back to our community and foster the love of reading at the same time!
We would like to help children who need to utilize the Rainbow House, Red Cross or the Homeless Shelter. These organizations help families in our community in VERY difficult situations by providing skills and resources needed by families at risk.
In addition: Students in 1st and 2nd grade are invited to join us on Tuesday, April 10th, 3:15 pm-4:00 pm for P,B & J activity time in any of our 3 Elementary LMCs. Wear your PJ’s and enjoy books, snacks and activities! Permission slips are due to the LMC by Friday, April 6th.
Drop off new pajamas or new/gently used books (or both!) at any of the Marinette School District library locations: Sunrise Early Learning Center, Garfield Elementary, Merryman Elementary, and Park Elementary Schools, Marinette Middle School, or Marinette High School.
