Fall 2018
We have had many kids ask if we are having a Book Fair. We are! Mark your calendars for November 12-16 for our Fall Book Fair. That week we also have Literacy Night planned for November 13 and our Thanksgiving Luncheon on November 15. Our library partners with our AMAZING PTA and we will be looking for some volunteers to assist to make the fair a successful event. More information will be coming out in a few weeks.
Ways to Select Interesting, Good Fit Books
I chose a book
Purpose--Why do I want to read it?
Interest--Does the book interest me?
Comprehend--Do I understand what I am reading?
Know--Do I know most of the words? Try the Five Finger Rule: read a page and every word you don't know, you put up a finger. By the time you get to the end of the page if you have 5 fingers or more that book is too hard.
With our older grades, 3-5, we also have another tool to assist with good fit book selection, the student's lexile reader measure. Students are given a lexile reader measure on the NWEA and are encouraged to pick a book with a text lexile measure in their range. Their range would be 100 below their reader score and 50 above. For example if they got a 500 reader score their range would be 400-550. So students could find a book in that lexile range that interests them. Students will be shown how to use our library program, Destiny, to search for books in their range.
Library Book Clubs
Birthday Book Club (Grades K-5)
Birthday Book Club is an extraordinary way to celebrate your child's special day and help the EG Library grow. For a $5 donation, your child will choose a new book to have a birthday nameplate in designating in was donated to the library in honor of their birthday. They will also receive a certificate, bookmark, and get their picture taken for our display. Most people enrolled during registration. If you did not, please fill out the Birthday Book Club form linked here and return the form to the library with cash or a check made out to Eagle Glen Elementary Library.
Great Kids Can Read Club (Grade 3)
The Great Kids Can Read Club promotes reading by providing an annual Nominee list of quality, contemporary literature for third graders. The list is a combination of picture and chapter books. We have a club just for third grade that encourages students to read each book, answer a few questions to show they completed it, and reach the milestone celebrations. They are:
*Read 4 by October 26, get 10 extra book checkouts
*Read 7 by December 20, get a Hot Chocolate Reading Party in January
*Read 12 by February 28, get a certificate of achievement and celebration party
For more information visit Great Kids Can Read page.
Mark Twain Club (Grades 4 & 5)
The Mark Twain Club promotes reading by providing an annual Nominee list of newer, quality literature for fourth and fifth graders. We have a club that encourages students to read each book, answer a few questions to show they completed it, and reach the milestone celebrations(same as the Great Kids Can Read that are above).
For more information visit Mark Twain Club page.
Chat N Chew
In working with our student readers, many of the older students have expressed interest in a book club in which we select a book we would enjoy reading and we meet as a group over lunch to discuss it. We are in the planning stages of the club with information to come soon.
Talk to your child to see if they are participating in any of these fun clubs!
