Kindergarteners spent a beautiful day at Deals Orchard last week!
2nd Grade Social Studies
During their study of communities in social studies, 2nd grade classes are learning how people in a community work together to make decisions on local issues. They are discovering that individuals can take action to address local issues. After learning about the many unique attractions, businesses and events in the area, they brainstormed to determine something that Boone needs. Next, they planned a design on paper, and built a cardboard prototype of their proposed building. Students also used democratic procedures to discuss possible locations for their vision. This involved using map skills and considering pros and cons. To complete the vision for their idea, they assisted in taking green screen photos which were added to a virtual background of their preferred location. These creative 2nd graders are future leaders of the community!

EDGE
McGuire Bryant a senior took EDGE pre apprenticeship construction trades his junior year and this year is doing a paid internship in construction trades with Story Construction from 7:30 -11:00 every morning. McGuire has a strong background in construction working for his grandfather in the summer and according to Story Construction after his on onboarding process will be a great fit for their company and has a lot of potential in this industry.
A couple weeks ago, Junior Ashton Thilges went on two job shadows with wildlife and fisheries biologists from the Iowa DNR.
His first job shadow was observing and participating in the process of banding ducks. He went to a designated location where his mentor had put traps in place that morning, and they retrieved the ducks for banding. During the banding process, they would identify the gender and age of the ducks. Once that was done, they would clamp a small band around the foot of the duck and release it back into its habitat.
His next job shadow was learning, and participating in the process of trapping and taking data on fish populations. Once again, he went to a location where his mentor had already set traps, and retrieved the fish from the traps for data. The data process consisted of them taking weight, and length measurements of the fish and entering them into a database. Once that was complete, they would release the fish back into their habitat.
These experiences are giving Ashton incredible insight into what a career in this area would look like while allowing him to begin networking. He has been communicating with his mentors since day one and has already learned so much through these experiences.
The Hooper Scoopers are back for the 2021-2022 DMACC Men's Basketball Season!
Your defending National Champion DMACC Bears would like to invite all 2nd - 8th grade students to sign up for the chance to be a Ball Boy/Girl for the Men's Basketball Team. There will be an opportunity for 4 students to participate at each home game. Each participant will receive a t-shirt to wear during the game that they will get to keep. They will also receive free entry into the game along with 4 passes for family/friends to get into that same game. Please arrive at each game 20 minutes (times on sign up reflect this adjustment) before tip off to receive t-shirt and instructions. We will meet in the upstairs weight-room, above the gymnasium. Finally, a parent/guardian must be present with each participant.
Pease sign up early as we anticipate this being a popular opportunity, and space is limited! Limit two games per student per season. When signing up, please be sure to include the school, grade, and shirt size (Youth Medium - Adult Large) of the participant. Go Bears!!!
YSS Mentoring Program - Update and Volunteer Opportunity!
The YSS Mentoring Program is looking forward to a return to in-person mentoring for the 2021-2022 school year! The program matches students in grades K-8th with a trained volunteer mentor once per week during the school day. These weekly meetings provide a positive, caring role model to eat lunch with, play games and simply talk about the student's interests and ideas.
Information and volunteer applications can be found at https://www.yss.org/program/mentoring.To learn how your child can become a participant, contact Tracy at boonementoring@yss.org or Heidi at hchopskie@yss.org.
Free School Breakfast and Lunch for all Students for the 2021-2022 school year
Tasty Toreador Meals - Supply Chain Issues
• This school year, thanks to federal pandemic waivers, all students will be eligible for free meals, regardless of family income.
• School meal programs nationwide are experiencing many of the same supply chain issues that have impacted restaurants and grocery stores throughout the pandemic.
• Our school nutrition team is committed to ensuring students continue to have access to healthy meals each school day.
• Just as families have to make substitutions on grocery lists, schools will have to make some last-minute changes to our regular menus, based on availability.
• We hope parents and students will be patient as we sort through these supply chain issues.
• We may not have the same menu choices that we typically offer our students, but we’ll be sure that all students are nourished and ready to learn.
*Reminder: For students bringing a sack lunch and wanting school milk, there will be a .50 cent charge per carton.

Athletics Registration
Toreador Families,
Our "Online Athletics Registration" is live and active for the 2021-22 School Year (link is below). Please take the time to read through the information, and fill out the forms for your student. All students involved in District-Sponsored Athletics in grades 7-12 will need a completed online athletics registration on file, along with a current physical form (physicals are valid for 13 months after the date of the physical). There is a place within the registration to upload the completed physical form.
Completion of the Registration/Physical is not required for the attendance at any summer camps that may be offered. However, the Athletics Registration and Physical Form must be completed and on file before a student may physically participate in practice this Fall. For High School, this starting date is Monday August 9th. Middle School practices will begin a couple weeks later near the first day of school.
