Raureka School Term 2 Week 5
Newsletter 2 June 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou katoa, Talofa lava, Kia orana,
What a shame the weather was bad last week and it caused the postponement to both Barefoot 7's Rugby tournament and the Senior trip to the Atea. Both trips will be on at a later date.
This week the Junior Team start off our Keeping Ourselves Safe programme with Constable Che. This is a great programme and helps us help the children to learn strategies to be safe. He will be working with all classes in the next few weeks.
This week is Samoan Language week and the Pasifica group were invited to perform at the Hastings District Council yesterday. It was a privilege and honour to do so. Our Children performed extremely well, please see the photos below. A huge thanks to Caroline and Mr Filipo. A huge thanks to the parents who provided transport, and of course the children who were superb.
We started our Monday assembly with a Samoan karakia led by Sulianah, Sone and Uriah.
On Friday all of our children will receive another Duffy book, this has been sponsored by the Government. I hope everyone enjoys their new book.
Education Review Office: We are now about to have our next ERO Review for school start. The review will follow a new process as we will have a Review Officer working with us over a number of years. This process will start tomorrow with a meeting with the BOT and I. The purpose of this meeting is to get to know one another and build a working relationship between us. The Review Officer will come into school and visit us a number of times over a year or two instead of being in school for a few days in one week.
I will keep you up to date with what is happening.
Junior trip to Pakowhai: The junior team are visiting Pakowhai next Thursday, 10th June, as part of their Inquiry learning. Let's hope the weather is better than last week.
Next Friday 11th June we have our annual School Disco- it will be fun with the Juniors starting at 6:00 and finishing at 7:00 and the Seniors from 7:15 until 8:30. It will be $3:00 entry with drinks and chocolates on sale as well. Thanks to the RSS for organising it.
Hockey: there is no hockey this weekend as it is Queens Birthday weekend.
Have a great long weekend and remember that school starts on Tuesday 7th June.
Headlice (nits, kutu) are making themselves at home in some classes. Could all parents please check their child's hair thoroughly. If you find nits, please treat your child. We do have some free treatment available from the school office.
Please remember that classes start at 8:55 a.m. each day and all children should be at school, unless they are sick, ready to start then. When the children arrive on time they do not miss out on valuable learning time and they feel as though they haven't missed anything. Keep in mind too that when children arrive late it can be hard on their classmates as after an interruption - some children struggle to refocus on the lesson.

Hello Room 21 - what have you got to share with us this week?
We are starting our mission to keep our environment clean and safe.
Please keep our school clean.
If you see rubbish, pick it up and put it in the rubbish bin.
Rubbish is bad for our planet and it is dangerous for the animals. We need to be responsible for our place.

be purchased in town.
· Do your child’s records need updating?
- moved house?
- phone/cellphone numbers changed?

- emergency contacts changed?
- medical details?
Medical Reminders
We often have a few ‘bugs’ around the school.
· A common one is a nasty cough/flu type illness. Keep your children home if they have symptoms of this as it spreads easily.
· If your child has had vomiting or diarrhoea, they MUST stay home for 2 days after the last event. This illness definitely spreads quickly around the school.
· Headlice are always around so make sure that you check your child’s hair regularly (we suggest weekly) and treat the hair if necessary. We have treatments available from school for free. Just pop in and we can give you some.
· If your child is at all unwell, please keep them home so that they don’t pass bugs on to other children. Also if a child is feeling unwell they are not able to learn easily and are much better off at home snuggled up in bed.
Don’t forget to contact the school office to let us know when your child is unwell please.
Volunteers needed for supervision of our school patrollers. The children are well trained, it is just a matter of having an adult supervise from 8.30-9.00. We need help on the following days - Front Gate: Wednesday, Friday, Back Gate: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday.
