Our 100th day of school is on February 8th and February is a very important month for celebrating history and culture. February is Black History Month and we celebrate the birthdays of two very important presidents, Friday, February 18, Abraham Lincoln's Birthday and Monday, February 21, George Washington's Birthday. School will be closed both days in recognition of the President's Day holiday. Many cultures around the world will also be celebrating the beginning of the lunar New Year February 1 - 15.
Please be on the lookout for information from our teachers about upcoming spring assessments for students, recognizing all of these important days and other classroom celebrations!

NEW - Guidance on Masking and K-12 Schools - NEW
The California Department of Public Health announced today that the state will reassess masks in schools on February 28. Earlier today, Dr. Mark Ghaly, California Health and Human Services Secretary held a press conference addressing the face mask mandates in schools. Speaking for the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Dr. Ghaly said that the current Covid-19 trends are used by the state to provide “an approach to keep schools open and thriving.”
With Covid-19 cases dropping rapidly throughout California, Dr. Ghaly said, “Masking requirements will expire as conditions improve. Masks are not intended to be in place in perpetuity. The question is when, not if.”
As of today, Dr. Ghaly said there is, “no change to the CDPH masking requirement,” but on February 28, 2022, the CDPH will reassess conditions for a change to the statewide school masking requirements.
The state will review cases, hospitalizations, vaccine rates and trends and make an announcement at that time. Local public health departments and local school districts are not authorized to change the state-issued mandate. Dr. Mark Ghaly, California Secretary of Health and Human Services, stated in today's message that it is likely that masks in schools will be recommended rather than required based on data.
We will continue to keep you posted with the most up to date information.
Sincerely,
Hueneme Elementary School District

Celebrate Black History Month 2022
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month,
it honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.
Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
The Black History Month 2022 theme, “Black Health and Wellness,” explores the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birth workers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.

English Language Proficiency Assessments - Coming Soon
The Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California, or “Summative ELPAC,” is the test used to measure how well students understand English when it is not the language they speak at home. This years testing window is open from February 1, to May 31st 2022. Information from the ELPAC tells your child’s teacher about the areas in which your child needs extra support.
This spring, your child may take the Summative ELPAC.
Students in kindergarten through grade twelve who are classified as English learners will take the Summative ELPAC every year until they are reclassified as proficient in English. Students are tested on their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Your child’s voice is being recorded as part of the Speaking test.
You are an important part of your child’s education. To help your child get ready for the test, you can:
· Read to your child, or have them read to you on a regular basis.
· Use pictures and ask your child to tell you what they see, or what is happening in each picture.
· Provide your child with opportunities to use language outside of school.
· Talk with your child’s teacher about your child’s listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to help support their progress.
To learn more about the ELPAC, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.
You also can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the ELPAC Starting Smarter website at https://elpac.startingsmarter.org/ .
If you have any questions about your child taking the ELPAC, please contact Mrs. Tellez-Soto, EL Support Teacher at 805.488.2217 ext. 1887 or via email at: rtellez@hueneme.org
