Solar Eclipse
Dear Parent/Guardian:
On April 8, Pflugerville will be in the path of totality for a solar eclipse. The eclipse will begin at 12:30pm and conclude by 3:00pm. Between 1:35-1:40, the Sun will be completely blocked by the Moon. This is an exciting and special event that our students have the opportunity to experience.
Our campus has an eventful day planned for students. Keeping students safe is our number one priority. Students will receive instruction on eye safety, including how to properly wear provided eclipse glasses and instruction to not look directly at the Sun before and after totality. During totality, which lasts about 2 minutes, it is safe for students to look at the Sun's corona without protective eyewear. Our campus has chosen to allow students to view the Sun during totality without glasses. Our teachers will review expectations and procedures with students so that everyone is prepared to view the eclipse safely. Totality can be experienced without looking at the Sun directly. Students will feel the temperature drop, hear nighttime bugs chirping, and see how dark it becomes. On April 8, students will have a altered lunch schedule to allow for an early lunch. Students will be dismissed to the football field for the event and will receive protective eclipse glasses upon exiting the building from designated doors near the student parking lot. Please stress to your student NOT to exit the building without receiving protective eclipse glasses that will be available at designated doors near the student parking lot.
Please review the safety information below with student:
If you do not want your student to participate in the solar eclipse events planned for April 8, please complete the opt-out form linked below. Students who do not participate will stay inside during the eclipse.
