PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora
Welcome to Declan who has joined Whakarewa this week.
Today we enjoyed a modified version of our school triathlon. All students biked, ran and swam and students cheered for each other when waiting for their year group to race. The exercycles were a novelty for our Year 3-8 students who usually ride their bikes on the road. Thanks to Nick Burson for his organisation of the triathlon and to all staff for their support. The triathlon marks the closing of our school pool for the winter. Togs won’t be required at school from next week.
On Tuesday this week, we said farewell to our guinea pig, Alfie, who passed away. Alfie has been a feature of our school community for about 7 years and he leaves behind his hutch-mate, Richie, who is enjoying some extra cuddles this week. Thank you to the Year 8 students who prepared a resting place for Alfie and a sign to mark the spot. Each team had a chance to say goodbye and place some flowers in Alfie’s grave.
Covid-19 case notifications
With low numbers of Covid-19 in the school, we are currently only notifying the team concerned when a new positive case is identified. If case numbers grow, we will begin to provide a daily summary of case numbers in each team. I will keep you informed when we make this change.
Reporting to parents booklet
Our approach to reporting to parents is outlined in our booklet (below). It explains our beliefs about reporting and outlines the schedule of reporting for 2022. Continuous reporting posts will be appearing in Hero over the next few weeks and these will include samples of work from your child and teacher and student reflections. We invite you to look at these with your child and celebrate their progress. You can also comment on the posts.
The reporting is Hero is one way that we communicate learning with you. If you have additional queries about your child’s learning, please contact the teachers who can answer your questions or make a time to meet with you.
Driver safety near school
Please take care with driving near the school. There was a near-miss this week when a car overtook a bus on Heywards Road, causing the bus to swerve into a student who was biking home from school.
Road safety around the school is the responsibility of us all. Please take action on the following to help keep everyone safe:
· collect your children from the school gates and walk them to your car
· park tall vehicles (SUVs, vans, utes) in the hall car park so that cars backing out of the parks on the Heywards Road side can do so safely
· the bus stop outside the school gate is not a stopping bay for cars. Please park your car in a designated park.
· Take care not to park on yellow lines
· The legal speed for passing a stationary school bus is 20km/h for traffic travelling in either direction
Thank you for your support!

We will be more than happy to help arrange (in confidence) the support you need.
