What we are learning about this week....
Math: The students will continue learning/practicing fractions this week. In second grade we are responsible for laying the foundations of fractions and the common language; such as, equal parts, halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, etc. Students DO NOT learn numerator and denominator in second grade or use the symbols 1/2, 3/4, etc. Fractions are a very abstract skill, so it is our job to make sure they get the foundations first then they can build on their knowledge. Students will be using models and hands on tools to work with fractions throughout the week. Later in the week students will be completing a guided spiraling sheet and an individual spiraling sheet.
Social Studies: We are switching gears from science to social studies. The spotlight in social studies will be time and chronology. The students are expected to order events by using designations of time periods such as historical and present times; including, past, present, and future.
Reading: The big idea in reading will be comprehension strategies in a testing format. Students will locate facts and details about nonfiction texts and support answers with evidence from text. We call this focus "Read like a Third Grader", after this week of intense focus we will visit "Read like a Third Grader" once again to continue these skills. Book clubs will resume this week as well.
Writing: In writing students will be using their research information from the Culture study to complete an All About book on the culture of their choice. They will be using all the parts of a nonfiction piece in their writing.
