Highly Contested Presidential Race Series
by Audrey G.
Recently, many people have been announcing their plans to run for president in 2020. So far nine Democrats have officially decided to run, with many more still considering running, and only one Republican had officially decided to run. The Democratic candidates are Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, John Delaney, Tulsi Gabbard, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Marianne Williamson, and Andrew Yung. The only Republican candidate is Donald Trump. Over the next few weeks, I will be writing about each candidate as well as keeping you updated if any new candidates decide to run.
Cory Booker announced his plan to run for president on February 1, 2019. He has a background in politics, including his time as Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, and his current position as a Senator from New Jersey. He was also on the City Council in Newark where he went on a hunger strike in order to bring attention to urban development issues. During his time in the Senate, he has tackled many controversial such as criminal reform and the legalization of marijuana. Senator Booker was offered a position in the White House Office of Urban Affairs but he declined the offer because of his dedication to Newark.
Before he became politically active, Booker was a lawyer and graduated from Yale Law school. He also went to Stanford University and Oxford University. As a lawyer, he hosted legal clinics for low-income citizens in New Haven.
Cory Booker is a very socially involved person. He has always shown interest in controversial topics, and his political career has been heavily guided by such topics. He is running against many other well known Democrats in this coming election, but his recent involvement with the Kavanaugh investigation puts him fresh in the voters minds.

YouTube Usage at SSS
by Lainey T.
Second Street School has blocked Youtube due to some fifth-grade boys pulling up dog whistles on Youtube. These boys have ruined it for the whole school to watch Youtube during indoor recess and other times we have free time. Due to the boys, Youtube has been banned from Second Street School for a long time or it might just depend on kids behavior around the School. To conclude, Youtube has been banned from Second Street School and this is not fair to the rest of us.Arts and Entertainment
Review: The Hamilton Soundtrack
by Rebecca V.
The musical, Hamilton, has been making headlines ever since its Broadway debut on February 17, 2015. As I have not yet been to see the musical, I will just be reviewing the soundtrack. The musical is divided into two acts, the first act has twenty-three songs, as does the second act.
The soundtrack traces the life of one of America’s founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. The soundtrack begins when Hamilton first moved to New York (Alexander Hamilton), it continues on to the day that he meets his wife (Helpless), and his role in the war (Yorktown). In the second act, the soundtrack covers his frequent feuds with Thomas Jefferson (Cabinet Battle #1, and #2), his affair and the aftermath (The Reynolds Pamphlet), and his death (The World was Wide Enough). With the final song, the soundtrack continues to explore the life of his wife after his death (Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story).
Overall, the soundtrack has been given some explicit ratings, due to the occasional cursing and nature of a few songs. However, most people consider the educational benefits of this soundtrack to outweigh the bad. The soundtrack’s morals also seem to balance out some of the negative. In “The Reynolds Pamphlet” Hamilton acknowledges that he did the wrong thing and that he shouldn’t have done it. He openly admits it rather than keeping it a secret like he originally intended to. “The Schuyler Sisters” has a strong feminist moral, the three sisters: Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy, sing lyrics like, “‘We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal’ and when I meet Thomas Jefferson, I’m ‘a compel him to include women in the sequel.”
Hamilton is the top-selling cast album, topping Wicked, Rent, and Finding Neverland. Although the soundtrack totals over two hours of music, it is most certainly worth your time.
The Day I Was Almost Kidnapped
by Will W.
One, normal day, I was walking home from school. My normal route took me past Bryant’s Pic Pac, so if I had money I would normally go inside and get a drink or some chips. But on this day things almost took a turn for the worst. I was entering the store when I heard to my right, “Hey boy, come here…” as the guy wiggled his finger in a commanding motion, but obviously, I didn’t come to him as I knew things probably wouldn’t end well. I looked back in front of me and kept walking into the store, knowing it was the safest place until my would-be captors left.
I continued to get my chips and my drink and proceed to checkout. When I got to the register the cashier questioned me “ Did some guys tell you to come to their car outside?”
“Yeah,” I responded even more intrigued than before.
“Ok, here I’ll buy your items for you.” She rang up my items for me free of charge, when I walked out of the store, the red truck that the two old men were sitting in was gone, and I never saw it again.
Sometimes when I think about this I almost regret going up to the truck, because I’m almost certain I could’ve escaped them, just to see what would happen.

Super Mario WORLD Review
by Kaycee H. and Khaalyn W.
Kaycee: “It's a-me! Mario!”. That’s something people can grow up hearing. Super Mario is a really popular game, and Khaalyn and I are going to be reviewing Super Mario World! Super Mario Bros. World is the game that comes before “Super Mario World 2 Yoshi’s Island”. I personally LOVE this Mario game better than the other Mario games. I like how the worlds get harder the more you progress, and how difficult the bosses get! I really like the special star levels, since you can get an original ending or you can unlock a new special level. I love how depending on your level, you can get different colored Yoshi’s based on the level you’re on! Those are just a few of my favorite things from this game, but Khaalyn needs to have a turn!
Khaalyn: I believe that Super Mario world is a timeless game that every age can play. This game it is very fun to watch and a great time killer and also very relaxing. You can play this game for hours on edge and not get bored. You pass this game you will want to play it over and over and over again. This game was made by Shigeru Miyamoto, and ever since then Super Mario world has been a big hit and soon more and more versions of Super Mario there are over 200 different versions of Super Marios. It is in many different countries play it.Hopefully you now have a new perspective on Super Marios.
Game Review- South Park: Fractured by Whole
by Anthony S.
One game that is very interesting the game is called South Park: Fractured but Whole. It is about a kid who moved and they play different games and in this game their superheroes they fight fake supervillains and people who steal cats. The main character does not talk so it's hard to understand the storyline when there's no communication. There are different classes in the game like there is a cyborg an assassin elementalist and it goes on. You get to choose four and get artifact slots. You get artifacts every time you finish mission. Artifacts make you stronger you can get different outfits and scars and things like that. Overall if you have enough time to play it's a very fun exciting game.
Advice from Miss Knows a Lot and Miss Helping Hands
Dear Miss Knows a Lot,
I have a lot of difficult and annoying people in my class. They are distracting and cause me to not be able to do my work. My teachers don’t want to deal with them. What can I do with these nuisances?
Sincerely,
Irritated
Dear Irritated,
Don’t worry, I have irritating people in my class too. Everyone does. If you’re sitting near them maybe ask the teacher (politely!) if you can move away from them. Other than that, the only advice that I can offer is to ignore them. If no one laughs at them or gets irritated with them, the fun is sucked out of it for them and they’ll hopefully stop being so annoying. I would like to say that once you graduate you’ll never have to deal with this again, but, sadly, you’ll always have to deal with irritating people.
Sincerely,
Miss Knows a Lot
Dear Miss Helping Hands, I have too many books to read in a short amount of time and have extracurricular activities to do. HELP ME PLEASE!!! Dear Anonymous, I understand what it is like to be extremely busy with extracurricular activities. What I would suggest is to make a schedule of what is going on that day and if you have some free time read for about 20 minutes a day if you can make time for that. A perfect time to read is right around when you are going to bed. Usually, no extracurricular activities run very late and you should be able to find time to read a little bit a day. Also, you could read a little on the weekend and you should be able to finish a book quickly. I hope this helped you figure out what to do when it comes to reading your books efficiently while still being very busy. Sincerely, Miss Helping Hand
