HEB ISD Parent and Community Survey
From the Assistant Principal's desk. . .
Hello and welcome back! As we enter into the spring semester, our students will have numerous opportunities to show how much they have learned throughout the year. We have several Curriculum Based Assessments (CBAs) and District Benchmark Assessments (DBAs) scheduled for this semester; in addition to STAAR testing. Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD utilizes these two forms of district-wide common assessments to guide teaching and learning across the district.
CBAs are an integral part of the instructional process and are crucial to improving student learning. These assessments are designed with teacher input and aligned with Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD curriculum, which is based on concepts and skills identified in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). CBAs provide information regarding student mastery of the curriculum, and results are then used to identify gaps in learning to guide intervention planning for students. In addition, CBAs provide teachers with information regarding their teaching as the data will denote the fidelity of curriculum implementation at the level of rigor intended by the curriculum. Also, our DBAs are aligned to STAAR and are followed by high quality, corrective instruction designed to remedy whatever learning deficits the assessment identifies. Teachers facilitate learning by providing students with important feedback on their progress, using the data to develop specific intervention plans, and guiding students in setting goals for achievement at the highest level.
Together, with these two assessments, data will provide information that is predictive of student success on STAAR and will indicate if curriculum and instruction are at the appropriate level of rigor for student success. Thank you for continued effort in partnering with the school to ensure our students are successful on each of these assessments.

Transfer Window
Schools of Choice Application Window
Date: January 04, 2016 – February 29, 2016
Applications for our Schools of Choice programs must be submitted during the Transfer Window (January 4 - February 29, 2016).
If you are applying for a SOC program at a campus other than your home campus, a Transfer Application must also be completed for that campus.
Shady Brook is one of HEB ISD’s Schools of Choice offering the Suzuki Strings Program in Kindergarten through 6th grade to prepare students for the secondary orchestra program. If you are interested in this program, please see Mrs. Campbell in the office for an application.
The Suzuki Method is an internationally renowned method for teaching young children to play an instrument. It is modeled on the Mother Tongue approach of language acquisition, and parents are integral to the process. For students to participate, a parent (or grandparent) must be available to attend a weekly lesson during the school day (during the FA/PE time) and practice daily with the child at home.

Counselor’s Corner
In our guidance lessons, we are currently talking about anger management. Students are learning that it is okay to get angry--it is a normal human emotion that we all experience. However, students are being taught that it is not okay to hurt themselves, someone else, or something (example: property) when they are angry. Students are learning that they must control their anger instead of allowing anger to control them. We are watching and discussing videos that demonstrate various strategies and techniques to learn how to handle anger productively and safely. Please talk with your student and allow them to share some of the anger management techniques that we have discussed in our lessons.

KAB CLUB
KAB club talked about random acts of kindness in our last meeting. We want to encourage students at Shady Brook to show kindness and cooperation with others not because you will get a Brook Buck or a prize, but because it is the right thing to do. It feels good to show others around us that we care about them.
KAB club will meet again Tuesday, February 2nd in Mrs. VanKleef’s room after school until 4:00 p.m.

Notes from our Nurse...
Eat Right, Think Right
We’ve had a great start to the school year at Shady Brook! It is important to remember one of the best ways to help our children learn is to ensure they are eating a well-balanced diet.
What is a balanced diet?
MyPlate, designed by the USDA, helps children and adults visualize nutritional needs from the basic food groups. When preparing, choosing and serving meals with your family, practice filling your plate or lunch box according to these guidelines.
Fruits – Fruits include any fruit or 100% fruit juice. Fruits can be raw, canned or pureed.
Vegetables- Together, fruits and vegetables should fill half of your plate. When choosing vegetables, encourage your child to pick a variety of colors. Don’t forget to eat from the Salad Bar coming to Shady Brook!
Protein- Proteins should make up ¼ of your plate and include the following foods: beef, poultry, pork, eggs, beans/peas, nuts/seeds, soy and seafood.
Grains- This group consists of two types of grains, whole grains and refined grains. It is important to make sure at least half of your grains are whole. Examples include whole wheat, oatmeal and brown rice. Grains should make up ¼ of your plate.
Dairy- Children of ages 4-8 should eat at least 2 ½ cups of dairy a day. Children of ages 9-13 should have at least 3 cups of dairy each day. Switch to fat free or low-fat dairy when possible.
By teaching and encouraging healthy diets for our students, we are helping build strong bodies and minds! For more information and tips visit www.choosemyplate.gov.
Something to think about...
No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.
