Three Bridges School
April 2017
TBS Makers Day
NJ Makers Day began in 2015 as a way to enhance community engagement and allow New Jersey residents to come together to explore hands-on learning experiences. Three Bridges School participated in our second annual MakersDay on Friday, March 24th. Students at each grade level solved a different STEM challenge based on a fairy tale.

Second Grade STEM
Second graders mushed through the month of March by completing STEM based activities for the 2017 Iditarod Race in Alaska! The 1,049 mile race took just over eight days to complete but our students’ work began long before the start! During computer class, students researched a musher then created a bio for that musher in Kidspiration. Next, they worked in teams to design, then build sleds for their mushers. The sleds were tested and sliding distances measured to identify the winning team! Each team followed the engineering design process to help their musher cross the finish line in Nome, Alaska! Once the race started, students received the Race Musher Standings report to review each day during lunch. They recorded the data on a line graph to keep track of their musher’s progress in the race. Each day students researched and posted the weather conditions and temperature at the check-in towns along the race. The culminating activity was for the students to race in the 2017 Three Bridges Iditarod. During gym class the children formed teams and raced across the gym pulling their musher onto victory!
