SLCS District Update
September 9, 2021
Note from the Superintendent
Good Evening SLCS Families and Staff Members,
The school year is in full swing and I want to take a moment to share the energy and excitement I was able to experience on Tuesday. Visiting each of our schools throughout the course of the morning made for a tremendous day. Staff members were ready and excited to greet students. Students seemed delighted to meet their teacher(s), join their classmates, and see some friends perhaps they didn’t see throughout the summer. Parents, guardians, and grandparents also seemed to enjoy the first day experience with many pictures, laughs, and hugs as the day began.
There is no doubt that the abrupt transition from a summer time schedule to a school schedule is an adjustment for all of us. We may find ourselves a little more tired this weekend than most. I’d encourage everyone to get some extra rest, but also take advantage of the nice weather and get outside for some fun activity.
I have no doubt that we will continue to maintain this positive energy throughout the school year and make this an outstanding year for our students. My thanks to each of you for doing your part each day. There is no better school community than SLCS!
SLCS Proud! SLCS Strong!
Steve Archibald
Superintendent
Moving this school year?
Families are required to update their child’s school in a prompt manner when their address changes. Please submit a Change of Address Form which can be found on the District website.
A student who begins the school year at one school and then moves within the District to another in-district school boundary, may remain at that school for the remainder of that school year only.
A student who begins the school year at one school and then moves outside of the District after the first state Count Day may remain at that school for the remainder of that school year only.
If the student begins the 7th grade year, but then moves to the other middle school´s boundary he/she may remain at the school to finish his/her middle school experience.
If a student has begun his/her freshman year in his/her high school program, but then moves to the other high school´s boundary he/she may graduate from that school.
In all of the situations summarized here, students who reside in a different school boundary and elect one of these options, transportation between home and school is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. If families are unable to provide their own transportation in these cases, the student would need to enroll in the new boundary school.
We recommend that district families check the boundary maps on our website prior to purchasing a home or signing a rental agreement if they are relocating elsewhere in the district and desire a specific school or to remain in the boundary of their current schools. Remember that as the district’s population changes, school boundaries occasionally change as well.
Secondary Families
Each of our secondary schools will be hosting an in-person Curriculum Night event over the next few weeks to welcome parents into our buildings. These nights are designed for parents to go to each of their child’s classes to learn about the class itself, as well as meet their child’s teacher. Below are the dates and times for each of our secondary buildings’ events:
South Lyon East High School September 13, 2021 6:30 pm
South Lyon High School September 15, 2021 6:30 pm
Centennial Middle School September 20, 2021 6:30 pm
Millennium Middle School September 22, 2021 6:30 pm
Please see the communications from your child’s school for more information about these events.
Elementary Families
Each of our elementary schools will be hosting in-person Curriculum Night events over the next few weeks to welcome parents into our buildings. These nights are designed for parents to go to each of their child’s classes to learn about the class itself, as well as meet their child’s teacher.
Prior to the pandemic, elementary-aged students were invited to attend these events with their parents. To reduce the number of people in the buildings at one time the 2021 Curriculum Night events are for parents and guardians only. Students and siblings are not able to attend this year.
Below are the dates and times for each of our elementary buildings’ events:
Junior Kindergarten September 23, 2021 5:30 pm
Grades K, 1, and 2 September 23, 2021 6:30 pm
Grades 3, 4, and 5 (Pearson only) September 29, 2021 6:30 pm
Grades 3, 4, and 5 (all but Pearson) September 30, 2021 6:30 pm
Please see the communications from your child’s school for more information about these events.
Virtual Learning Pathway Families
Our elementary Virtual Learning Pathway classrooms will host a virtual Curriculum Night presentation for their families. These nights are designed for parents to virtually visit their child’s class to learn about the class itself, as well as meet their child’s teacher. Links to a Google Meet will be shared by your child’s teacher. Below are the dates and times for the elementary VLP Curriculum Night events:
Grades K, 1 and 2 September 23, 2021 6:30 pm
Grades 3, 4 and 5 September 30, 2021 6:30 pm
Our middle school Virtual Learning Pathway families will follow Millennium Middle School’s Curriculum Night schedule. Links to the Google Meet will be shared by your child’s teachers. Here is the date and time for the middle school VLP Curriculum Night event:
Millennium Middle School September 22, 2021 6:30 pm
For eighth grade VLP students in high school courses like Algebra I or Spanish I, information will be shared in the next two weeks by your child’s teacher. Since these courses include students from all four secondary schools, there is not a live presentation.
For high school VLP courses with SLCS teachers, information will be shared in the next two weeks by your child’s teacher. Since these courses include students from several secondary schools, there is not a live presentation.
Food Service
Our school nutrition staff looks forward to welcoming students back to school and into our
kitchens! We will continue serving healthy school breakfast and lunch to fuel our students for
success. This school year, thanks to federal pandemic waivers, all students will be eligible for free meals, regardless of family income.
School meal programs nationwide are experiencing many of the same supply chain issues that have impacted restaurants and grocery stores throughout the pandemic. Our school nutrition team is committed to ensuring students continue to have access to healthy meals each school day. Just as families had to make substitutions on grocery lists last year, schools will have to make some last-minute changes to our regular menus, based on availability. We hope parents and students will be patient as we sort through these supply chain issues. We may not have the same number of menu choices or may need to change the menu for the day, but we will be sure that all students are nourished and ready to learn. We will work to substitute for items that are unavailable.
We look forward to serving your child this school year.
Transportation
Also, a reminder that families can help in the short term by transporting student(s) to and from school. Having fewer students utilizing a route may allow us to combine that route with another or add additional stops for the route. If you (or someone you know) are looking for a fun and rewarding experience, we’d love to have you join our team of bus drivers. Please call 248-573-8900 if interested.
