Math Updates
This week in Math we solved multistep numbers stories using two operations. We discussed the steps in solving a number story; What information is given?, Make a plan., and Solve.
We also multiplied by 0 and 1, talking specifically about what that means.
Building a READING LIFE
This week we compared readers to marathon runners. Just like marathon runners, readers need to keep working on their skills. Reading won't always be easy so we need Grit! The willingness to persevere even when things get tough, just when you think you can't keep going, push even harder! We also talked about figuring out difficult words while reading. We shared different strategies that we can use to "tackle" the word and figure out it's meaning.
Word Study
Word Study tests will be on Friday, October 12th.
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
Writing long & strong
During writing we have been discussing when to start a new paragraph; time change, when a new person speaks, and a new subtopic. We also looked at our writing to make sure that there is a balance between talking vs details. We continue to draft, draft and draft!

Walk-a-Thon
We had so much fun during the walk-a-thon! Our class walked for a half an hour and then we were given a refreshing treat at the end! What a great event! We can't wait to see Mr. Bentman in that Winnie the Pooh costume, riding a bike! Thank you PTO!
