KTS Newsletter
Term 2, Week 9, Tuesday 28 June 2022
Coming up...
A warm KTS welcome to three new students: Nyarna (Rm 4), Harmala (Rm 11) and Thukha (Rm 12).
Mānawatia a matariki! We were thrilled by the number of families who joined us at dawn on Maungawhau last Thursday. While the stars were hard to see we shared some special moments; the korero, karakia and waiata marked the occasion well. Thank you to Willie Rickards (Head of Sport AGS/KTS Board member), and Neitana Lobb (Deputy Principal AGS) for their contribution on the maunga and to Erynn for her preparation of the kai. We are also grateful for the support of all our staff for the day and for the mahi they have put in over the term as they, and the students, have deepened our learning about Matariki. We would also like to thank those of you who supported the event and those who sent through photos. Our two community kapa haka performances were very well received; tino pai to Gaylene Hewlett, Anusha Chebbi and the group.
There is a display in the front foyer which includes pictures from our matariki celebrations and examples of associated learning from various classes.
We hope that you enjoyed the long weekend and had time to relax with family and friends. Our final learning posts for the term, together with mid-year achievement levels will come out at the end of next week. Three-way learning conferences will take place in term 3 as mentioned last week: Tuesday 2nd August (via ZOOM) and Thursday 4th August (at school). Details for those will come out closer to the time.
We have two weeks of term to go. We are looking forward to welcoming Nanogirl to the school on Friday for a presentation to years 4–8; her approach to science is always engaging. We will finish with the excitement of Book Week in week 10 (see below for more information); come and watch our character parade through Mt Eden village if you are free, it is always entertaining!
– Catherine
Board of Trustees Meeting
As you will be aware, the Board of Trustees elections will take place in September. If you are considering standing and would like to find out more about what happens, you are invited to attend our next meeting this Wednesday, 29th June, at 6.00pm. This will be a face to face meeting in the school staffroom. If you would like to attend, please email alison@kts.school.nz. We look forward to welcoming you.
Book Week
Book Week is coming up in Week 10, on 4–8 July, with some exciting events planned.
Author visits on Tuesday 5th July:
Koru – Jo van Dam, author of 'T is for Tuatara' and other picture books
Harakeke & Pohutukawa – Joanna Grochowicz, author of 'Shackleton's Endurance' and books on Scott and Amudsen's Antarctic Expeditions.
Other activities include a competition for Year 4–8 (see poster below) and a Scavenger Hunt for Year 1–3.
Jo’s books can be ordered through this website or through the school. Please let Jane know if you have paid for any books. She will sign them and bring on the day and this can be extended for a week after her visit so no need for postage.
There have been some lovely book covers coming in for the competition.
The week culminates in our traditional Book Week Character Parade on the Friday morning (last day of term). Students can be creative and put their costumes together with things from home. You do not need to buy an expensive costume. If the weather is fine the whole school parades through Mt Eden Village which is always exciting.
Road patrol help
Catherine is updating the road patrol roster for next term. Thank you so much to those regular supervisors who support us - watch out for your ‘thank you’ coffee voucher next week. We still have three quarters of our supervision being done by school staff so there are 15 weekly slots available for parents. All we ask is for up to 20 minutes of your time from 8:25 to 8:45am or 2:55 to 3:10pm. Please email catherine@kts.school.nz to add yourself to the timetable. Thank you!
