HERSHEY NOTES
DECEMBER 8, 2017
FROM THE DESK OF MRS. FIELDS
This was a busy week! Many Hershey classes participated in the “Hour of Code”, a computer coding initiative involving over 100 million students worldwide. Sue Scott, TSC Coordinator of Communications, had the opportunity to talk with some of our students about coding. To read this story, go to the TSC home web page and click on the picture of our students working on a computer. In addition, TV 18 and STAR TV interviewed and videoed several Hershey students and teachers about their coding projects. If you missed the televised broadcasts, the stories can still be found on the stations’ individual websites.
Thank you to Mrs. Franscoviak and Mrs. Williams for all of the time they spent making the Holiday House such a success! These ladies shop all year long looking for a wide variety of affordable items for our students to purchase for their loved ones. It is heartwarming to see how much time and effort goes into selecting the perfect gift for you and other family members! We also want to thank the many elves who worked behind the scenes wrapping gifts. It was synergy at its best!
We have a new school nurse! Please help me welcome Mrs. Liz Rupp to Hershey. Mrs. Rupp was serving as Harrison’s school nurse; however, she could not pass up the opportunity to become a Hershey Panther! Mrs. Rupp is well versed in TSC policies and procedures, so she hit the floor running on Monday. Don’t hesitate to reach out to her with any health related questions and concerns.
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our Student Services Coordinator, Mrs. Michelle Lehman. Mrs. Lehman accepted a position with Ivy Tech. While her shoes will be difficult to fill, we have begun the interviewing process and hope to have the position filled soon. We wish Mrs. Lehman all the best with her new role in education.
Thank you to all that attended the Chick-Fil-A dine out night Tuesday, November 28! Once again, we had a fantastic turnout! Due to your support, we earned $379.00! I was assigned to the milkshake station, and I now have a new appreciation for fast food workers! Who knew that there were so many steps involved to making a milkshake? Our next dine out night will be January 23 at Fazolis. Mark your calendars.
The month of December we are focusing on Habit Number 2: Begin With the End in Mind. This is the perfect habit on which to focus during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season! When we take a few minutes to plan ahead, tasks are done more efficiently and in a timely manner. We encourage students to take a minute at the beginning of each day to think about how they want their day to go, then plan what is needed to have that outcome. If we choose to approach all tasks with a good attitude, we are more likely to end with a great day. Be sure to talk about Habit 2 with your child!
INtegrate WELLNESS TIP
The holidays are a great time to practice Habit 2! If you make a plan that helps you navigate special events, you will be more likely to keep moving towards your health-related goals. By having a plan before you go to a party, you can feel more confident and in control of your choices while still enjoying the company of others. It might be helpful to:
Eat ahead of time
Bring your own dish
Eat smaller portions
Choose vegetables
Being mindful of what you drink-water is always a good choice.
Happy Holidays!
MRS. LEHMAN'S UPDATES AND INFORMATION
Technology Tips from Mrs. Greeley: It’s never too early to talk to your child about safe online behavior. If they have a device, talk to them.
I would like to let you know my last day at Hershey will be December 15th. This is such a bittersweet announcement. I have accepted a position as a Human Services Faculty member at Ivy Tech Community College. I have been teaching as an adjunct faculty member for several years. This will be a wonderful position for myself and my family. However, it will be very difficult for me to leave my Hershey family! I want to thank you for your support and for allowing me to work with your children. It has been my pleasure to see the children grow, learn and thrive at Hershey. Warm wishes for you and your family!
Sincerely, Michelle Lehman, MSW, LCSW
PTO
Movie Night - Friday, Dec. 15 "Parents Night Out" - extended time 5:30 to 8:30. Pizza Dinner will be served. There will be short Christmas movies, pizza and a fun activity.
DRESS WARM
It's that time of year when the weather can be quite frightful! Children should always come prepared for the weather. Hats, gloves, scraves, heavy coats are all essential. Please label your child's belongings either inside the pocket, cuff or on a tag so that when they misplace them we can return them!
Recess will be held outdoors unless the temp/wind chill is 15 degrees or lower. Recent studies show that outside play helps to develop the prefrontal cortex. It calms anxiety and refocuses the brain.
Also, keep in mind that we never know when a bus may delayed and children possibly stranded on a cold bus or standing outside waiting on the bus for a period of time.
THANK A TEACHER
Public Schools Foundation of Tippecanoe County is a not-for-profit organization that raises private funds for public school teachers.
